Officials said the Democratic Allied Forces (ADF) are rebel with machetes and rifles that killed more than 50 civilians at a funeral in the east of the Congo, the last major attack by the group related to the Islamic State.

Macr Seviconola, the local official, said that the ADF attack was held on Monday night in the town of Netwiu in the province of Lubro County, Northern Kivu Province.

“I can confirm a temporary death number of 50 years. The victims were arrested at a mourning party in the village of Netwio at about 9 pm (local time), and most of them were killed by machines,” he said. “Search continues.”

ADF started as an uprising in Uganda, but it was its headquarters in the neighboring Congo since the late 1990s, which the Islamic State armed group recognized as a subsidiary.

High attacks

A group of ADF attacks added to the insecurity in the eastern Congo, a mineral rich area where the Rwanda -backed rebels from Rwanda made great progress earlier this year, prompting the administration of US President Donald Trump to try to mediate peace.

Last month, ADF killed more than 50 civilians in multiple attacks, while the ADF attack left in July on the 38th church.

Colonel Alain Kiuwa, military director in Lubro, told Reuters that the death toll on Monday night was about 60 years and could rise as there were still missing people.

Samuel Kagini, the local civil society leader, in addition to the use of organizations, said the attackers also shot some victims and set fire to vehicles.

Alan Kahindo Kinama, a resident, said that the Congolese soldiers arrived at the scene on Tuesday morning and that many people were trying to leave the area.

Congolese army spokesman, Lieutenant Mark Eljo, said that ADF fighters “have already committed the massacre” by the time the soldiers intervened.

There was no immediate comment from ADF.

On Monday, the group won the credit for five modern attacks on Christian civilians and Congolese and Ugandan armies, according to the site’s intelligence group.

The Congo Army and its ally Uganda says they have increased its operations against ADF in recent weeks.

The attacks exacerbate the plight of the Congolese in the eastern region, where many other conflicts, including a major conflict between the M23 rebel groups supported by Rwanda and the central government.
