Beautyrest High Loft Air Mattress: The Beautyrest Hi Loft Double Air Mattress comes with an electric pump mounted on the mattress. Once installed, it inflates the mattress in about 2 minutes, although not as fully as I would have liked. Once inflated, you need to quickly disassemble the pump and replace the valve cover. It’s not the most elegant solution.
The Beautyrest air mattress has the same sausage set design as the Bestway air bed and the unstable feel of pool buoyancy. (Many companies that make air mattresses also make inflatable pools and pool accessories. Go figure.) It lacks the stability of other air mattresses and I nearly flipped it over by lying too far to one side.
Keep in mind that it may not be the best air mattress for you if you are tall. Simons lists its dimensions as 80 x 60 x 17 inches, but my measurements put it closer to 76 inches, which means anyone taller than 6 feet will likely have to dangle from the end. The mattress is made of a softer type of vinyl than others, making it easy to roll up and fold into a compact shape for storage.
Bestway air mattress: An example of an inexpensive air mattress, the Bestway Air Bed is compact, lightweight, and relatively quick to inflate using its built-in pump.
On the downside, this air mattress is only available in one size, which is not comfortable at all. It sits 12 inches low off the ground, and the pump isn’t powerful enough to fully inflate it, so it makes for a rather squishy ride. The tubular design gives it the appearance of a hot dog can, and the raised horizontal hot dog meant to round out the pillow’s bolster sets the mattress askew, making it even more unstable.
The Bestway Air Bed has a lot of negative reviews on Walmart.com citing slow air leaks, rapid air leaks, blown seams, spontaneous bubbles and terrible customer service (in addition to dozens of very positive reviews). Although the comically vague manufacturer’s warranty doesn’t instill confidence, warranty isn’t a critical consideration here given the price. However, Walmart’s policy is that most items can be returned in their original packaging for a full refund within 90 days.
