Below is a copy of the interview with Senator Chuck Schumer, who was broadcast on “Facing the Nation with Margaret Brennan” on October 5, 2025.
Margaret Brennan: Welcome to the nation. Senator Chuck Schumer is the largest democratic on the other side of the Capitol and is now joining us from New York City. Good morning, leader. I want to take something that the head of the house was referring to. He wants this battle to be around illegitimate, he said. And I want to be specified here, because we know from our research that there is no federal funds that tend to the health care tax credits for immigrants who are not documented in this country. The federal government does not finance health insurance for non -documented. But it is also true that countries like you, New York, provide health care for the illegal people in this country. And their argument seems to be money here is not consuming, and the end result is that it comes from the Federal Pocket. Do you want to respond to that?
Senator Chuck Schumer: As you know, they don’t want it, Johnson does not want to discuss the real issue, the health care crisis facing the American people. So he puts all these fake lies to try to turn attention. It is his usual process. He is interested in politics. Each independent agency is looking at this that Johnson’s claim is wrong. And as I said, Margaret can go, no, in the Zero Federal dollar to immigrants who are not documented through medical care, through Medicaid, through ACA. Thus we must talk about the real issue here, which is that we have a health care crisis in America caused by Republicans. They flared up, raised us towards a closure because they do not want to deal with this crisis. Normal and simple.
Margaret Brennan: Well, let’s talk about closing in a moment. Regarding health care, as we took, in terms of messages, Democrats, as I understand it, are looking for an obamacare tax credit. I think you want them permanently. I heard that the speaker says we can talk about it after the government reopens, and perhaps not permanently. But do you hear any kind of openness here to a negotiator at all?
Senator Shomer: Well, now, no. See, Johnson is not serious about this. He sent him, all members of Congress to his home last week and home this week. How will you negotiate? –
Margaret Brennan: – Well, he says the job is in the Senate. With you with the leader Thun –
Senator Schumer: – It is, well, you do not need, no, you actually need Johnson if you are going to negotiate any agreement. You need Johnson, Thun, Trump, Shomer and Ceffries. The reason that he sent them home is that he is more interested in protecting Epstein’s files from protecting the American people from the health care crisis. We have been trying for months and months of sitting with them and a serious conversation that meets the needs of US health care. They refused, rejected and rejected. And only in your offer and on other offers, when they asked him, well, will you do it in January. He says, he starts in January. –
Margaret Brennan: – Yes. –
Senator Shomer: – He says, no, we will have a conversation. Well, you know what later means. We have tried 45 days, 45 days and 45 days of March. We asked them to vote three times. Republicans in the Senate, voted three times. So we need to solve this crisis. Look –
Margaret Brennan: – It was a permanent extension. The draft law that I think you refer to is Senator Shaheen. It was a permanent extension. It was not, as you know –
Senator Shomer: -He, Johnson did not commit –
Margaret Brennan: – A compromise suggested some Republicans. –
Senator Shomer: – Yes. Margaret, Johnson has not committed to any extension and will not do so until the American people force him to do so. This is not, and by the way, the crisis does not start in January. Two days ago, starting from October 1, millions of Americans get notifications that their health care premiums are increasing dramatically. If you are a 55 -year -old husband, and you pay, get $ 80,000, you know how much your insurance installments will rise if we do not provide them? It will rise approximately $ 25,000. The average American will pay another $ 900. How can the Americans struggle to sit on the table on Friday night to know how to pay bills, how can they get such an increase? Democrats are simple. We want to extend it and thus will not have to pay this increase.
Margaret Brennan: Well. –
Senator Shomer: – Johnson does not want to do so. It is not serious about it, as it becomes clear from sending the house to the house for two weeks. You have to be here to negotiate.
Margaret Brennan: Well, you use Word Extens for a permanent make, just show there. –
Senator Shomer: – See. –
Margaret Brennan: – Then the number we see is the average increase of about $ 1,000 of the distinguished payments for most families that will enter into force.
Senator Shomer: – Correct, correct. Yes, this is terrible. This is terrible. –
Margaret Brennan: – In reopening every conversation, sir, though. –
Senator Shomer: – Yes. –
Margaret Brennan: – I mean, do you trust the Thuan leader? When you only look at your numbers here, three Senate members have already voted with Republicans on the short -term financing deal. Are you concerned about more splits?
Senator Shomer: See, it is a republican closure because they refused to talk to us. Johnson, I saw him mentioned that we did it 13 times when I was the leader of the majority. This is correct. You know why? In each case, we sat and talked to the Republicans and there was giving and taking, and then both sides did not get everything they wanted, but we did that. They refused to speak to us even once. –
Margaret Brennan: – Well, Thun, Thun Fox told that there are continuous and continuous conversations. –
Senator Schumer: – Jeffrez and I try to talk to us, because they tried to make us talk to them, we tried to talk to them for months, months and months. They said no. The American people know that they are responsible. Republican President, Republican Senate, Republican House of Representatives. They have the responsibility of the ruling, which means sitting and talking with us so that we can meet these needs.
Margaret Brennan: But a return to the issue of splits. The leader Thun was on another network, on Fox, and said there were talks with Democrats who wanted to find a slope out here. Are there talks with Democrats with you? Are you sure that you cannot, will you get splits?
Senator Shomer: Yes. Margaret. The organs of democracy encouraged sitting and speaking with the Republicans. It is always good when Democrats and Republicans speak to each other, but two points. First, in those conversations, Republicans did not present anything. And, secondly, the only way to be solved in the end is if there are five people sitting together in a room and resolving it. They are the president, who does not seem serious about this. You know that he comes out of his momentum and things with a dark harvest and all these things. He plays golf. Johnson is not serious, so we have to sit, five of us. This is the way to solve this problem. But when Democrats speak to the Republicans, this is a good thing. It encouraged the Democrats to do so, but they did not offer anything to us. No change.
Margaret Brennan: Have you tried to contact President Trump? It appears to receive phone calls. directly. –
Senator Schumer: – Well, as you know, we sat, we tried to get President Trump to sit with us a few weeks before the start of the closing day. –
Margaret Brennan: – So no. Well. –
Senator Shomer: – He said, yes. He said, no. Johnson told him to say no. We sat, as you know, the previous day, and it was not serious. Put these red hats on the table, joking. Frankly, at the meeting, Margaret, I felt that he did not even knew what was happening. That the crisis was imminent. People will pay like this –
Margaret Brennan: – Yes. –
Senator Schumer: – He once said they would pay all of this. It will be bad for me. Thus, the court here is the American people. The American people hear what is happening, and they demand the treatment of this crisis. –
Margaret Brennan: – Yes. –
Senator Shomer: – They are demanding to sit together and do so. It is just logical. They say, as you know, in your survey –
Margaret Brennan: – Yes. –
Senator Schumer: – They say 75 % of people feel that Trump does not do enough. Another survey conducted by the Washington Post showed that he only did 80 % of the American people
Margaret Brennan: -Good, we have –
Senator Schumer: – The American people are now speaking to the members of the Senate, as you know, talk to members of Congress. They tell them, and accomplish this. We want to accomplish it. –
Margaret Brennan: – Our CBS poll also shows that any of the sides do not get good degrees on any of this. A leader, we will have to leave this here at this moment. We will return.
