Below is a copy of an interview with MP Tom Suzuzi, Democrat in New York, which broadcast on the “confrontation with the nation with Margaret Brennan” on July 6, 2025.
Wijdia Jiang: We are now moving to a member of the Democratic Congress in New York Tom Susie. Congress member, thank you very much for your time this morning.
representative. Tom Sokuzi: Yes, thank you very much for hosting me.
Wajia Jiang: Well, I have just heard of Kevin Haysit, as you know, like President Trump, without this bill, will be one of the largest tax increases for the American public. They say it is the greatest tax reduction in American history. Sitting on the Roads and Means Committee, so I must wonder how to describe it.
representative. Suozzi: I describe it as an ugly big draft law, not the “beautiful big bill”. He will do a lot of things that will harm many people in our country. The largest that I talked about with Mr. Haysate is a significant increase in the country. And what does that do, is to create inflation, which keeps interest rates high, which makes it difficult for people to buy homes, make it difficult for them to borrow money, and do the things they want to do. In addition, a group of people will knock on health care. We know that the Republicans have tried for a decade to retreat from the OBAMACARE care law, and this is a kind of background to take health insurance away from the people who really need it here in our nation. This will lead to high health insurance costs for many people. One of the biggest issues he made is to quickly reduce prices on the first day, we will reduce the costs. Well, the costs do not decrease, and inflation will be affected by this deficit. Useful interest rates will remain high, and this will have a negative impact on the costs of health insurance for many people in our country.
Weijia Jiang: I know that you just have made a civilized and a potential coverage loss. What do you say to some Americans who might wonder, well, why should the body that is able to work to reach Medicaid?
representative. Suozzi: Well, you have to understand that 92 % of people who are able to work are currently working, and 8 % who are often not people who take care of handicapped children. Remember that two thirds of people in the care of the elderly are on medical aid. Ten all the old warriors in the United States of America are medical. Medicaid is the lifeblood of many people who face such difficult circumstances that we cannot even imagine. And why do we take health insurance and nutritional benefits away from some needy Americans while we provide what I think is an unnecessary tax break for some of the richest Americans. It is not logical that you reduce taxes for some of the richest people, which harms some of the least -income people, with the budget of the largest budget deficit that we had in the history of the country. These things only do not add up.
Weijia Jiang: Well, only last week, I said you are agreeing to 75 % of what is in this package, and this is a very important number. So why not deserve 25 % that you do not like?
representative. Suozzi: Because those things I have just mentioned are very devastating. I love the idea that we are investing more money to secure the borders. I like the idea that we are offering tax exemptions for low -income people, middle -class people hard work and people who aspire to the middle class. I love the idea of providing tax exemptions to these people. But why do we offer- and when the economy does as it has been over the past few years, why do we offer a tax decline- tax exemptions for some of the richest Americans in our country, while we surpass a huge hole in the deficit?
Weijia Jiang: A member of Congress, I want to resort to an article I wrote in the Wall Street Journal last week, saying, Zahran Mamdani’s victory in the preliminary elections for the Democratic town in New York City should be a quote, “wakes out loudly for Democrats.” What are the lessons that you think your party can learn from its campaign?
representative. Susie: Well, as you know, I do not agree with Mr. Mamdani. I must make it clear, as you know, I am a democratic capital. I am not a democratic socialist. And- but you have to realize that he took advantage of something. He took advantage of the same thing Donald Trump used, which is that people are concerned that the economy is not working for them. The ability to bear costs and the economy is the first issue in the country. Democrats are often not seen as focusing on the ability to withstand costs, economics, middle class, people who aspire to the middle class and their economic interests. They see that the Democrats focus primarily on reproductive rights and the protection of LGBT, which are important issues, but they are not the issues that people think every night when they lie in bed, think about paying their bills or when they talk about how to send their children to school. So Democrats should do better with learning from both Trump and Mamdani not with their solutions, which I think is wrong, but with the diagnosis of the problem we are frustrated, we are worried. Everyone in America, whether you are conservative from the right wing or the left wing, should think that in exchange for hard work, you earn enough money so that you can live a good life. You can buy a house, you can educate your children, you can pay for your health insurance, you can one day retire without afraid. People are not currently feeling that, and we have to do better to connect it.
Jiang: Well, I am happy because you put a visualization, because you also wrote that “Democrats should recognize the future with the economic security message of American families.” The Biden campaign was covered. The Harris campaign was covered. This was the center of their messages. So what is the problem here? Is it the Messenger? Is it the correspondence? Because they already have this message.
representative. Suozzi: It is a mix. Issue- the Democratic Party, like a whole, must have this platform that focuses on what people are interested in. They are interested in the economy, are interested in immigration, are interested in taxes, care about the crime, and are interested in health care. But then, we have to realize that the media infrastructure is broken, and Trump has discovered this in front of the Democrats, which is that not only traditional media like your shows and newspapers, but it is social media. It’s podcast. Podcasts, the best 500 podcasts in America, 400 of the best 500 tends to right. 100 let them tie. Of the 100 left, half of them hit, you know what, from the Democrats. Then you have other national media, after which you have some of these ethnic media and rhetoric related to WeChat and WhatsApp and different types of applications that people use. Therefore, we have to communicate through all these platforms, because people receive their messages in these broken environments and live in these echo rooms, and we must do better in communication through all these platforms and get the Democrats as a whole to focus on the economy, immigration, etc.
Weijia Jiang: Well, a member of Congress, we all try to learn all these new languages. Thank you very much for your time this morning. We will return with a lot of confrontation with the nation. Stay with us.
