Rumors that Taylor Swift might be making a documentary about her record-breaking Eras Tour have been circulating for more than a year — in part because many attendees, myself included, witnessed filming during the Eras Tour dates.
We learned Monday, during an announcement on Good Morning America, that the rumors are true. The six-part docuseries “The End of an Era” will be available on Disney Plus starting December 12, the day before Swift’s birthday. Additionally, the streaming service will also feature a concert film The Eras Tour: The Final Show, an updated version of the Eras Tour film filmed at the final show held in Vancouver last December.
Swift’s fruitful partnership with Disney Plus began during the pandemic with the release of Long Pond Studio Sessions – a reflection of her time making the folklore album with producers Jack Antonoff and Aaron Dessner, featuring live performances. The newest shows will mark Swift’s third and fourth collaboration with the streaming service, which has certainly earned her unofficial Disney princess status.
End of an era
The perfect early Christmas gift for any Swiftie, The End of an Era is a six-part documentary series filmed over the course of the tour, with what appears to be a particular focus on the London shows. The first two episodes will be available on Disney Plus on December 12. It is not yet clear when the other six episodes will be available – there may be a weekly release schedule or they could be released in batches.
I’ve attended all but one of the Eras Tour shows in London, and I’m very happy with this series. The trailer for The End of An Era shows off several key moments that I personally experienced, including appearances by Gracie Abrams, Ed Sheeran, Florence and the Machine, and the legendary appearance of Travis Kelce.
Each of these magical moments is seared in my memory, as the Wembley Stadium crowd collectively realized that something different, special and amazing was happening every night. The trailer suggests we’ll see how these moments were rehearsed, and we’ll shed new light on the different ways Swift planned and prepared to delight us as her audience.
We’ll also gain new insight into how Swift handles the emotional intensity of the tour. In one clip included in the promo, the star is seen running a bathroom, supervised by her cat Benjamin, and talks about how hard it is to get down after the show. While peeling off her false eyelashes, she says she watched a lot of television, ate room service, and fell upon a box containing 2,000 CDs. “Then I get tired,” she says. “Then we do it all again.”
Tour of the Ages: Final Show
Over the course of two years, Swift did the whole thing again, a total of 149 times, finally concluding the tour in Vancouver, British Columbia on December 8, 2024. This show was very different from the show that debuted in Glendale, Arizona in March 2023. And it was different even from the show recorded for Disney Plus that was turned into Tour of the Ages movie During Swift’s time in Los Angeles.
By the time the Eras Tour reached Europe in May 2024, Swift had released an entirely new album, The Tortured Poets Department, and rearranged the setlist to include a new track based on the TTPD era. And in December, for the first time, this version of the show will be available as a standalone film.
Tour of the Ages | The final show will feature the final concert of the tour filmed in its entirety. The film is directed by Glenn Weiss, a different director from the original tour film, and produced by Taylor Swift Productions in association with Silent House Productions.
I’ve only seen this version of the tour, so having a record of this tour to re-watch would be helpful to me. It will also be important to many other Swifties who did not attend the Eras Tour with the original setlist. As is the case with Swift Reputation tour filmI know I will be watching it for many years to come to reminisce about a special summer.
