Salvation. revenge. dominance. In any rematch there is history, legacy and story at stake.
When people hear the word “rematch,” they usually think of boxing, where two fighters step into the ring and compete for the right to be crowned, better, faster, stronger… champion.
What’s always interesting about a rematch? Well, there’s always someone trying to assert their continued dominance and someone else who has a big point to prove.
That’s exactly what will happen on Saturday when Hull KR take on Wigan Warriors in the Super League Grand Final at Old Trafford, live. Sky Sports.
Wigan are looking to continue to assert their dominance and win the ‘triple-peat’. Hull KR are on track for their first ever Grand Final win, securing a historic treble and becoming just the fifth Premier League team ever to win the big dance.
It is a battle of first against second, history makers versus history chasers: everything indicates that this moment will eventually arrive again.
At Old Trafford, “Jerusalem” is the walk-off music, “The Theater of Dreams” is the arena, and 12 rounds become 80 minutes of pure, hard-hitting rugby league.
Once the whistle blows, Wigan are aiming for Floyd Mayweather to be the winner of his two fights with Marcos Maidana.
They want to be Evander Holyfield, to beat Mike Tyson in their first fight and in an immediate rematch.
They want to channel Carl Froch the way he beat George Groves in their second fight.
While their win over KR wasn’t as shocking as Tony Bellew’s win over David Haye in the opener, they would certainly like to challenge him the way he did in the second match, and dominate him again.
They don’t want to give Robins an inch. They want to say: “We hit you once, now we’re going to hit you.”
But for KR Hal? It’s a different story they want to create.
They lost their opening battle. A magical moment from Wigan’s Bevan French left them scrambling at Old Trafford, wondering what could have been.
It was a sneaky uppercut that hurt them in the seventh round, and although they continued valiantly into the twelfth round, they never recovered.
But since then they’ve become more battle solid, they’ve won some big fights, and they have some belts. There is a League Leader Shield and Challenge Cup in the trophy cabinet. Now they want to become undisputed.
They guide Lennox Lewis, when he confronts Oliver McCall, to get revenge on him in a rematch.
They want to be the Joe Louis who lost to Max Schmeling and then avenged the defeat.
In fact, they are hoping Wigan will be Riddick Bowe – he may have beaten Evander Holyfield in their first bout but then lost in the second.
They want to be the boxer who rose from the canvas, dusted himself off, and then came back bigger, better and stronger than before to snatch the belt they always dreamed of.
There is a potential trilogy match looming in 2026, but now is the time to find out whether it will be ‘and still’ or ‘and the new’ as Wigan and Hull KR trade skins once again.
