Stellantis says it will invest $13 billion over the next four years to expand its U.S. manufacturing capacity, a move the automaker says will increase its U.S. vehicle production by 50 percent and add more than 5,000 jobs.
The world’s fourth-largest automaker said Tuesday that the investment will support the introduction of five new vehicles, including a Dodge Durango that will be manufactured in Detroit and a midsize truck that will be assembled in Toledo, Ohio. The new jobs will be distributed across plants in Illinois, Ohio, Michigan and Indiana.
Stellantis, which was created Four and a half Years ago with the merger of Fiat Chrysler and PSA Peugeot hoped to offset some of the cost of this year’s expected €1.5 billion tariffs on cars produced in Canada and Mexico by boosting North American profitability through the launch of new models like the discontinued Jeep Cherokee.
The company said the new product launches will be in addition to 19 “renewed” products at all U.S. assembly plants and updated powertrains planned through 2029.
“This investment in the United States – the largest in the company’s history – will drive our growth, strengthen our manufacturing footprint and bring more American jobs to the states we call home,” CEO Antonio Velosa said in a statement.
The announcement comes amid significant headwinds for the Canadian auto industry, which is grappling with tariffs imposed by US President Donald Trump, who wants to see more domestic auto production.
Stellantis’ U.S. operations include 34 manufacturing plants, parts distribution centers and research and development sites in 14 states.
In Canada, the company has factories in Windsor and Brampton, Ontario, and a casting facility in Toronto. It’s Brampton The factory has been closed since early 2024.
Of the 16 million Stellantis vehicles for sale in the US market, 8 million are built in domestic plants, and another four million in Canada and Mexico – all of which contain a large number of American components. Another four million are imported from Europe and Asia, with almost no American components.
Seeking a U.S. turnaround, Stellantis is also relaunching models in the second half of 2025 that previous management canceled two years ago: a new Jeep Cherokee, which will be produced in Mexico, and the popular gas-powered Dodge Charger, which is manufactured in Windsor, Ontario.
Earlier this year, Stellantis also relaunched the Ram Hemi V8 due to dealer and customer demand.
In July, the Netherlands-based carmaker announced half-year results including losses of 2.3 billion euros. During this period, US shipments fell by about a quarter as the automaker reduced imports of cars produced abroad.
Stellantis shares fell sharply in after-hours trading after closing down 4.8 percent during regular trading on Tuesday.
