Slovakia has changed its constitution, devoting recognition of the law for only two sexes – males and females.
The legal change, which was passed in the edge of the knife edge in Parliament, also restricts the adoption of husbands of two different sexes and prohibits an alternative load.
The constitutional amendment was defined as the dedication of “sovereignty in cultural and ethical matters”.
Critics, including Amnesty International, have warned that change would make life more difficult for gay people, saying that it is trying the country’s legal system of non -liberal Hungary or Russia Putin.
Parliament’s support for amendment was a surprise to the observers, so that the Prime Minister had confessed late Thursday that it may not pass.
The government of Fico- a coalition of popular, left-wing and nationalist parties-at least 90 votes in the Slovak National Council, which amounts to 150 seats to change the constitution, but really controls only 78 seats.
However, in the end, the voting of opposition deputies with the government. Conservative Christian Democrats were long expected to support their support, but many members of former Prime Minister Igor Matovic have added their votes at the last minute, and transferred the standards.
Matovic described them as traitors.
The national populist government argued that the amendment was necessary to protect what it described as “traditional values.”
Prime Minister Robert Fico praised the vote and said that his party will have a shot of alcohol to celebrate their success. “This is not a small dam, or just a normal dam – this is a great dam against progress,” I declare.
He had previously argued that what he called liberal ideology was “spreading like cancer.”
Slovak legal scholars say that the constitutional amendment that repeats the priority of the Slovak constitution over the European Union law represents a direct challenge to the European Union, and will lead to legal battles and possible penalties.
Some have said that this step was just a trick by Fico to distract from the low voting and unimaginable policies.
Beta Palajova, Editor -in -Chief of Sme Daily Sme, to the BBC, told BBC, “
She added: “Fico is not honestly concerned with gender issues, the ban imposed on alternative motherhood, or even adoption by gay people.”
Most opposition representatives of Parliament and the progressive Selukia, which leads opinion polls, said betrayal was the end of any possible cooperation with Matovic and his party.
President Peter Pellegrini said he would sign.
After the vote, he said: “At the time of the massive division within the Slovak society, the constitutional majority is an important indication of an agreement on a specific issue in the political spectrum, and it must be respected.”
The Democratic Robert Fico Party has now rejoiced in Khoukha, largely from the progressive values adopted by the main current in the center in Europe that reports say it will be officially expelled from the European Socialists Party (PES) at the next month conference.
Smer was suspended in 2023 after the formation of a coalition with the Slovak extremist Party.
Since then, Fico has angered European allies by meeting with Russia, Vladimir Putin, four times in less than 12 months.
Smer did not comment on the reports.
