India’s first-class pacer Shubman Gill did not have a great series with the bat in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. The 25-year-old failed to score big runs in the series which has now raised questions about his place in the Test team.
Gill’s poor form has raised questions about his ability to take over the captaincy of the team after Rohit Sharma. Former Indian cricketer Aakash Chopra recently spoke about players who could replace Rohit Sharma as India’s new captain and Gill was not on his list.
Chopra named Yashasvi Jaiswal and Rishabh Pant as the players who can become India’s captain in the future due to their consistent performances over the past few years. He also revealed why Jill is no longer considered for the role.

Shubman Gill has been overlooked as India’s next captain
While speaking on his YouTube channel, Aakash Chopra predicted that one of Yashavi Jaiswal and Rishabh Pant will become India’s captain after Rohit Sharma. He also mentioned Jasprit Bumrah’s name but feels that his injury problems do not stand him in good stead for the captain’s role.
“Yashavi Jaiswal and Rishabh Pant – which one can become the captain? It’s a nice question because, according to sources, Rohit (Sharma) has said he will manage the team for a few months, but after that, you (Sharma) can find the captain,” Chopra said. Whoever you want, and since there could be an injury problem with (Jasprit) Bumrah, that is your wish.”
Chopra also has a short-term solution as he wants Jasprit Bumrah to lead India in the Test series against England in June but wants the selectors to appoint a vice-captain in order to prepare him for the future.
“I had a solution that we had to see after six months. If Jasprit Bumrah captains the entire England tour, appoint the vice-captain properly because you have to groom him. Let’s be very honest, when we won the T20 World Cup, it looked like the process of Grooming was going very well.
Aakash Chopra talks about Shubman Gill’s demotion from the leadership group
While talking further on his channel, Aakash Chopra revealed the reason behind Shubman Gill’s demotion from the leadership group. Chopra also noted that the Indian team management tried to promote Gill by giving him opportunities in the leadership group but his performance deteriorated over time.
“Everything seemed to be going well. Shubman Gill was appointed vice-captain. He was being given that role regularly and then suddenly Shubman Gill was dropped. So he was pressed about what was happening as he would probably not come in as captain.” “Ideas and they don’t come in the T20 format at all,” Chopra explained.
A few months ago, things were looking good for Shubman Gill. He was seen as India’s next captain after Rohit Sharma, and was appointed vice-captain for the ODI series in Sri Lanka.
Gill also captained the team in the T20I series against Zimbabwe when regular skipper Suryakumar Yadav was resting. However, a sudden drop in form in the Tests raised questions about his place in the red-ball squad.
Shubman Gill in BGT 2024-25
In the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, Shubman Gill scored 93 runs in three Tests at an average of 18.60. He missed the first Test due to injury before the series. However, he returned to his favorite third position in the second game.
But he was not at his best and struggled against the moving ball in the face of a high-quality Australian bowling attack. Gill was later dropped from the final Test in Sydney due to the squad as India selected two spin bowlers.
