Indian red-ball skipper Shubman Gill has backed his Gujarat Titans teammate Sai Sudharsan despite the young left-hander’s early struggles in his Test career. Gill emphasized his abilities and reaffirmed his faith in the young man.

Ever since Shubman Gill took over as captain of the Indian team, he has found all his players scoring runs and dominating the longest form of absolute form. However, the Indian team failed to find a batsman to replace the legacy of former Indian legend Virat Kohli.

While Karun Nair has also been cast on several occasions in England, Sai Sudharsen was the most suitable choice for the role. However, he is still struggling to find consistency in form. After playing the first 3 matches of his career on English soil, he has managed just one half-century and has now missed a run when he played his first match on Indian soil.

“I don’t really think he’s going through a tough phase,” Shubman Gill on Titans teammate’s failed bid for India

Indian captain, Shubman Gill, threw his weight behind young batsman Sai Sudharsen. Speaking in the pre-match press conference, Gill urged patience and perspective when it comes to his Gujarat Titans opening partner, Sudharsan.

Ahead of the second Test match, which is scheduled to be played at the Arun Jaitley Stadium starting tomorrow, Gill’s message was one of calm and contentment.

“I don’t really think he’s going through a lean patch. He got just one run in the first match (Ahmedabad Test). In the Oval Test, he played a crucial 40-run knock on a wicket as the ball was swinging. The match before that, he scored a fifty in Manchester. Not everyone is going to score in every match. You have to give the young players more chances because they are still figuring out their game,” Gill said.

It’s unfair to judge Sudharsan based on a few roles – Shubman Gill supports Sai Sudharsan with a no. Third place in the Indian national team

The Indian skipper reiterated his belief in the youngster’s abilities, describing him as a long-term option for India’s No. 3 position. So far, Sudharsen has scored 147 runs in seven innings, while the numbers do not yet reflect the promise of the management’s decision to continue with him.

However, after ignoring Karun Nair, the signal is belief in Sudharsan as a long-term investment at the top of the Indian batting order.

“We believe you have to see a player’s potential in its entirety and not judge him on just one, two, three or four matches. Once you give someone six, seven or eight matches, you can sit down and assess where he needs to improve, whether that means playing more domestic cricket or first-class matches for India. But so far, we believe he is the right man for us, and someone who can play at number three for India for a very long time,” he added.

Sudharsen was seen working closely with captain Gill in the nets

Sudharsan is known to have a close on-field relationship with Shubman Gill ever since the two players opened for Gujarat Titans in the IPL. He was selected for the Indian Test team after the pacer clinched the Orange Cap with 759 runs in the last IPL season.

On October 9, a day before the second Test at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi, Shubman Gill was found working closely with Sudharsen in the nets. His powerful style and temperament impressed, but the lack of big results prompted quiet comparisons to the fate of Karun Nair.

Gill has been seen designing batting tips and even stepping in to practice alongside him during pitches. This highlighted the chemistry between the Indian players and also highlighted the captain’s confidence in the young cricketer.
