Former Indian batsman Mohammed Kaif advised Shreyas Iyer to stay there with the Indian team, as he rested him saying that a national call-up for T20 is just around the corner. Shreyas Iyer has been selected only in the ODI format so far.
Indian batsman Shreyas Iyer captained the Kolkata Knight Riders in IPL 2024 and led them to their third title. It was then bought for 26.75 crores by Punjab Kings. Shreyas went on to lead the Punjab Kings to their second Indian Premier League final after 11 years, since 2014, when they lost in the final.
Shreyas scored over 600 runs in the 2025 edition of the Indian Premier League. However, despite his impressive performance, he was not selected in India’s squad for the 2025 Asia Cup and was also ruled out of the opportunity to feature in the five-match T20I series against Australia.

Shreyas Iyer was told to ‘stay there’ by a former India batsman
Iyer has emerged as India’s most likely bowler across all white-ball formats, and it is not clear why he finds himself out of favor when it comes to the shortest form of the game. He was recently named in the ODI squad for the Australian tour, but has not been given a place in the T20I squad yet.
Former India batsman Mohammad Kaif has once again drawn everyone’s attention towards the Punjab Kings skipper, pointing out his dismissal across the formats. He mentioned how Iyer began his Test career with a century on his debut and his impressive campaign in the 2023 World Cup and 2025 Champions Trophy for India.
“Great to catch up with Shreyas Iyer. What a player. Hundred in 1st Test, 2023 ODI World Cup champion, only captain to have taken 3 IPL teams to the final. National T20 call-up is coming too, hang in there, great future awaits you Shreyas,” Kaif wrote on X.

Shreyas Iyer has appointed Shubman Gill as his deputy for the Australia tour
For the upcoming series against Australia, one cannot ignore the fact that they have once again been snubbed from a chance in the Indian T20I side; However, the good news is that Iyer has been announced as Shubman Gill’s deputy in the ODI squad.
The new Indian ODI vice-captain had recently captained India A in the 3-match unofficial ODI series against Australia A. Iyer also scored a stunning hundred in the first match along with Priyansh Arya.
India’s next T20I series will be at home against World Cup runners-up, South Africa, later in December. Shreyas Iyer may be eyeing a place in the squad for the home matches later this year.
Shreyas has sidelined himself from the longest format in the game
As recently as last month, Shreyas Iyer wrote to the BCCI asking the board not to consider his selection in the longest format of the game. After Karun Nair’s snub, Iyer may have been on the Indian selectors’ cards for a Test return.
He was also appointed captain of the India A red-ball team that played against Australia A; However, the veteran batsman revealed that his body is currently in no condition to bear the burden of five-day matches.
