Sergio Perez says he decided to return to Formula 1 with the new Cadillac team for the year 2026 to “enjoy” sports again after experimenting with bruises in his last year in Red Ball.
The return of Mexican races for the next year was confirmed in the new eleventh team in F1 on Tuesday, where Perez participated in the entry of high -experience -experienced General Motors with the 35 -year -old colleague, Valteri Bottas, who was the same on the margin this year.
Perez was dropped by Red Bull at the end of last season after a bleak operation in the second seat next to Max Versaben, just months after the signing of the two -year contract extension.
But after he spent time since leaving the spotlight to evaluate whether he wanted to return to F1 for the fifteenth season, the six -time race winner says that he had reached the conclusion that he had “made a mistake” sport and that he still had a “lot to present it.”
New from Tuesday’s announcement, Perez joined the latest version of F1 offer To discuss the reasons behind his return.
“I will be honest, it was not an easy decision because I had the honor to have a great profession in this sport, and with hatred, I felt that I did everything in this sport,” said Perez, the eighth driver with experience in the history of F1. With the beginning of the 28th race.
“But the more I continue, the more I think about it, the more clearly I spoke with my family on this topic, and we all feel that this is the right thing for us as a family, as a project, to return to enjoy it.
“Last year was very difficult. It was very difficult and I didn’t enjoy it.
“I love this sport and I want to return to enjoy it. This is the main warm factor behind the return is just enjoying it and we restore a lot of love for the sport that gave me everything.”
Significantly cut a comfortable personality in Sky SPORTS F1 Perez added that the interview after eight months of the race: “As you can imagine, this year was much better than the previous year, so I am sure I look somewhat tortured in this regard!
“It was a great weight on my shoulder last year.
“I don’t feel that I have anything to prove it because you know what happened in my previous team has already shown what the conflicts I have.”
“Now you are aware of the job I did in that car and this team.” – Perez on Red Bull alternative “
Ultimately, eventually in the Red Bull profession, which was ultimately created for 18 months, was urgently destroyed amid conflicts to continue their car.
This was followed by the first stagnation to vow in the middle of the road through the dominant Red Bull campaign at 2023 through a more expensive campaign when the package was closed in 2024.
He ended a year in which his teammate Verstapen won the title of his drivers, respectively, by scoring only nine points at the end of the eight eight in the Grand Holiday Race and did not score any platform in his last 19 attempts.
After losing to the Benin Championship against McLaren, Red Bull Managen decided that they saw enough and continued a change – but the conflicts of their second driver only lasted until 2025.
Liam Lawson’s first replacement continued in two races less than a point in the seat before his rank was reduced to the brother team racing team, while his alternative to Yuki Tsunoda scored only seven points in 12 races – and there has been nothing since May.
When asked about the reason for his belief that the Red Bull Second driver struggled a lot, Perez said: “I think it is just the full dynamics of the team.
“Everything is driven … It is clear that they have a unique talent with Max and everything, and when you get there, their development curve is very difficult for the second driver there to adapt mainly to the car.
“It is a unique car, and a very unique driving style has managed to survive for many years, but it is difficult and it is the way you work, and I saw it with great drivers before my time or even after my time.
“I think Yuki William scored like five (seven) points or something like that.
“So it is very difficult, very difficult, and they are great drivers, as you know, but this is the case in his leadership.
“It is just a unique driving style. Sometimes I could deal with it, I could adapt to it, but once there was a variable with the rain, with the wind or something, I became not applicable and then begins to make one mistakes after the other,” added Perez, who won five races in 2021-2023.

What attracted Perez to Cadillac?
Perez revealed that he had been talking with Cadillac leaders around 2026 since last December, as soon as he became clear that he would leave Red Bull.
He says the project “provokes me because it starts from scratch and I can put all years of experience in the team.”
After she previously pushed Sauber, McLaren and Force India/Racing Point before joining Red Bull in 2021, Cadillac will be the first new Formula 1 team that Perez was leading – although he says that the level of experience they were able to recruit makes it more likely to visit.
“The aspirations behind this with (CEO) Dan Torres, the Twg project behind him, said the commitment they are subjected to,” said Perez, who explains the team’s attractiveness.
“It is not only a new team, it is a team that fully extends and you can see it with drivers. They went for some experience, they did the same with a lot of the engineering team, and a lot of the group.
“It is a new team, but it is a team with a lot of experience in Formula 1, and the people who did everything in this sport, and this is great.”
