Senator Ernst launched a series of bills to move federal workers out of D.C

Exclusive – that it. Joni Ernst She will introduce legislation to move federal employees from Washington, D.C., to other regions across the United States as part of her effort to reform what she says is a broken government bureaucracy.

The Iowa GOP will introduce the first of these bills, which it has won exclusively Fox BusinessThursday.

The legislation, dubbed the “SBA Return to 5 Main Street Act,” would move approximately one-third or more of employees at the Small Business Administration’s (SBA) headquarters in Washington, D.C., to work centers outside the D.C. metro area.

The bill reduces SBA’s headquarters office space and “100 percent telecommuting” capacity, by moving at least 30 percent of headquarters employees to different regions across America and reducing headquarters office space by an equal amount. This comes after the SBA said that even if 100% of SBA employees showed up in person to SBA headquarters in Washington, D.C., only 67 percent of SBA headquarters capacity would be used.

Ernst’s new legislation also comes on the heels of a September Senate Small Business and Entrepreneurship Committee hearing on the impact of remote work on SBA services, during which a witness from Iowa explained how they had extreme difficulty contacting anyone at the agency.

“Ask any Small business Landlord – If your customers can’t get to you, your doors won’t be open for a very long time,” Ernst told FOX Business. “The SBA is supposed to serve Main Street, but there may also be a ‘closed for business’ registration at the agency because it is almost impossible to reach anyone with all the bureaucrats permanently out of their offices.”

“I can’t think of a better way to help SBA connect with the people it serves than to take some employees out of Washington and move them across the country,” she added.

Ernst is the founder and chair of the Senate DOGE Caucus, which supports the incoming Trump administration’s Government Efficiency efforts and which he co-leads Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy, who pledged to force federal employees who work remotely to return to their offices. But the GOP lawmaker has been on the warpath against government employees who “abuse” remote work for years.

Last week, Ernst released a report claiming the federal government has a “chronically absent workforce,” and called for moving federal workers out of D.C., implementing a “use it or lose it” approach to government properties, and tracking the productivity of individual workers.
