Scotch lovers in India are surprising. As part of the newly concluded India’s Free Trade Agreement, the Indian government agreed to reduce the current import tariff by 150 % on Scotch Whisky – a step that it praises as “transformative” by the Scotch Association. The tariff will immediately decrease to 75 % once the deal comes into effect and will gradually decrease to 40 % over the next decade.
This discount is expected to approach the distinguished and medium Scottish whiskey from Indian intermediate consumers, which leads to a significant reduction in retail prices. The bottle currently sold at $ 5,000 can soon cost about $ 3500 – $ 4000 after the first reduction, and even less over the next few years depending on local taxes and distributor margins.
Mark Kent, CEO of the Scotch Yousaki, described the Free Trade Agreement as “once in a generation deal”, adding that it “will be a big batch of two major global economies during troubled times.” He pointed out that “the current decrease in the current tariff by 150 % on the Scottish whiskey will be a manufacturer and has the ability to increase Scottish whiskey exports to India by one billion pounds over the next five years, creating 1,200 jobs throughout the United Kingdom.”
Besides prices, the draining tariff opens for a wider set of Scottish brands – especially small distillation and boutique factories – to enter the Indian market. The expectation is an increase in the qualitative, quality and promotional offers as brands in the UK compete with the Indian whiskey for the shelf space and consumer loyalty.
The Free Trade Agreement, announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Kiir Starmer, reflects a larger trade vision with a bilateral trade that is expected to exceed $ 100 billion by 2030. According to UK estimates, Indian tariff discounts reach British goods, including whiskey, including elimination of whiskey, including one million.
British officials believe that the whiskey is just one of the many “victories” in a deal that they say provides “billions for the British economy and wages every year.”
