New year, a new Samsung smartphone to put your money on. The company has officially announced that it will host Galaxy Unpacked Wednesday 22 January. It’ll be in San Jose, California, my hometown, if you care. We expect Samsung to announce Galaxy S25 seriesfrom small to super. Additionally, there will likely be a lot of Galaxy AI devices in store, as the event’s teaser shows.
You can follow Samsung’s keynote here at Gizmodo, where we’ll have the news as it comes out. Samsung will broadcast the event on its website YouTube channel.
What to expect from Samsung’s Galaxy Unpacked phone
We’re waiting to see what Samsung does next with its flagship series. Apple and Google’s latest releases have been relative successes since their debut last summer, so the stakes are high. Although Samsung was the first to offer AI as a value-add on a premium smartphone, it doesn’t have the Google Gemini to leverage it like the Galaxy S24 released last year.
The company had already told us that the Galaxy S25 series was coming in a press release several months ago. But we know nothing about his insides or what he intends to do. We can only assume that it will feature the latest Qualcomm chip, which is optimized for Samsung devices. There will likely be thinner bezels, a larger screen, and flatter corners, as was the case with the Ultra series. Some rumors say that the Galaxy S25 in the factory line resembles the iPhone, which Samsung has spent years differentiating itself from. Funny enough, so is the Google Pixel 9 lineup. Is this where everyone is headed in Android Land? As for the other models, the smaller Galaxy S25 is expected to match the screen size of Apple and Google’s lineup. A smaller screen could mean a device that’s easier to carry with all the goodies of its larger flagship brethren.
Now that we have an official date, the rumors will likely start spiking. Samsung is still relying heavily on AI to drive excitement forward. The teaser video posted alongside the Galaxy Unpacked announcement begins with someone waking up and asking the digital assistant to put “Galaxy Unpacked” on the calendar. Samsung will have to prove to its users that Galaxy AI is not just a gimmick, the way Bixby fell upon us after failing to deliver on par with Google Assistant.
If you’re a Samsung fan who can pre-order the device without knowing what’s next, the company is hoping to lure you in with a $50 reserve credit between now and launch day on January 22. Samsung offers a credit of up to $900 on trade-ins, so consider what tool you have in your arsenal that can help reduce the cost. Last year’s Galaxy S24 devices ranged between $800 and $1,300 for the Galaxy S24 Ultra. They will likely be priced around the same range this year or higher, with all the rising tariffs and costs.
