The International Olympic Committee said on Tuesday that the Russian teams, including the strong hockey team in the country, are still prohibited from competition at the Milan-Carkina Olympics in February as part of the sanctions imposed after the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
The International Olympic Committee was responding to reports from Russia that hockey officials from the country had talks with the International ECK on the Olympic participation.
“The recommendation of the Executive Council from IOC from March 2023 regarding teams of athletes with a Russian passport is still in place,” said the International Olympic Committee.
“This depends on the fact that, by virtue of the definition, a group of individual neutral athletes cannot be considered a team. We note that IIHF has confirmed that it will follow this recommendation.
A small number of Russian athletes and individual Ballen can participate in the Paris 2024 Olympics last summer after a strict examination by the International Olympic Committee.
They competed without the Russian or Belarusian flag. Instead, they participated as neutral athletes. All Russian teams were banned. Belarus has worked as a launching land for the invasion.
Four Russian skills in men and women were recently approved by the International Ski Union to try to qualify for the 2026 Winter Olympics as neutral athletes.
Russian hockey players won the gold in the Pyeongchang Olympics 2018 in South Korea and silver four years later in Beijing.
In October 2023, the International Olympic Committee suspended the Russian Olympic Committee for recognition on the regional Olympic Councils of the Russian-occupied regions in Ukraine-Luhansk, Donetsk, Jacon and Zaburisvia.
The International Olympic Committee said: “A recommendation (October 2023) was made after consultations with the relevant international federations and the stakeholders in the other Olympic movement.”
“This position reflects the suspension of the Russian Olympic Committee because of its inclusion of regional sports organizations on the lands of the National Olympic Committee in Ukraine.”
The Olympic Authority said: “This measure constitutes a violation of the Olympic Charter because it violates the regional safety of NOC in Ukraine, as it is recognized by the International Olympic Committee in accordance with the Olympic Charter.”
Olympics in Italy operates from February 6-22.
