MOSCOW (Reuters) – The Ukrainian military bombed a supermarket on Friday in the Russian-controlled city of Donetsk in eastern Ukraine in an attack that used missiles provided by the United States and wounded two people, a senior Russia-backed official said.
There was no immediate comment from Ukraine, and Reuters could not immediately confirm the report.
Unverified photos posted on social media showed a burned-out car in front of a two-story circular building surrounded by debris.
Dashcam footage posted by a nearby driver appeared to show the moment the supermarket – called Moloko (Milk) – was bombed, with a large explosion following and flames shooting into the sky.
Reuters was able to confirm the location from the facades of a nearby building, signage and the layout of the road, which matched satellite images and Street View images. The date is verified by the timestamp on the footage.
Denis Pushilin, a senior Russian-backed official, accused the Ukrainian military of firing US-provided Himars missiles into the region during the morning rush hour.
Russian news agency TASS said other buildings and about 15 cars were damaged in the same attack.
Pushilin said in a statement on his official account on the Telegram application that a residential building in the city of Svetlodarsk in the Donetsk region was also bombed by Ukrainian forces, killing a woman and wounding four others.
