Former UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has been appointed as a senior advisor by Microsoft and AI startup Anthropic, the latest British politician to swap Whitehall for Silicon Valley.

altar He has worked with both tech groups as UK Prime Minister, setting up an AI Safety Summit in 2023. He follows former Deputy Prime Minister and Liberal Democrat leader Nick Clegg in taking up a position at a leading technology company. Clegg was head of global affairs at Meta until earlier this year.

The former PM’s role at Microsoft will include providing “high-level strategic views” on geopolitical trends.

Anthropic competes with OpenAI and major tech companies including Google and Meta to develop AI models. The company, founded in 2021 by former OpenAI employees, positions itself as a safer alternative to competitors and has focused on building AI models for businesses.

Sunak, Anthropic and Microsoft did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
