Star wicket-keeper-batsman Rishabh Pant has decided not to take the captaincy for Delhi’s upcoming Ranji Trophy match against Saurashtra, starting Thursday, January 23. Star batsman Virat Kohli has been included in the squad, but has been included in the playing XI of the team. The next match depends on his availability.

Virat Kohli and Rishabh Pant were initially included in the probable list for the domestic season, but their international commitments kept them unavailable for the first leg of the Ranji Trophy and the white-ball tournament. With the new mandate of BCCI, star players are now joining their domestic teams.

Rishabh Pant said he doesn’t want to be around the Delhi captain

Delhi’s squad for the next two Ranji Trophy matches has been revealed. Rishabh Pant has not shown any interest in leading the team, allowing Aayush Badoni to continue in that role. The wicket-keeper-batsman, who is gearing up for his comeback in the domestic tournament, has made himself available for selection.

“The Delhi squad has been selected for the next two matches in the Ranji Trophy. Rishabh Pant has said that he does not want to captain the team. Therefore, Aayush Badoni remains captain. Virat Kohli has been selected in the squad but it is subject to availability,” a Sportstar journalist wrote on X (formerly known as Twitter).

Virat Kohli was treated for neck pain in Sydney

Virat Kohli received treatment for his neck issue in Sydney from Team India’s physiotherapy team, Revportz reported. DDCA president Rohan Jaitley will be updated on his availability for the upcoming Ranji matches by this evening.

“Virat Kohli has been treated for a pain in his neck in Sydney by Team India’s physiotherapist. DDCA chief Rohanjaitley will inform about his availability for the Ranji matches by this evening,” a RevSportz journalist tweeted.

Meanwhile, an ANI journalist stated that Kohli will likely miss the first Ranji match but may join the team for the second match.

Delhi are in a must-win situation ahead of their Ranji Trophy clash against Saurashtra

Rishabh Pant last played in the Ranji Trophy during the 2017-18 season. Since his return to the Indian team last year after a 15-month absence due to injury due to a car accident, he has become a regular in all three formats. However, his participation in the Ranji Trophy match is due to India’s recent performance in Test cricket.

Virat Kohli had a disappointing performance in the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy, as India lost 1-3. He scored just 190 runs in nine innings, at an average of 23.75. Apart from an unbeaten century in the second innings of the Perth Test, Kohli has failed to make significant contributions with the bat.

Delhi are in a must-win position in their upcoming Ranji Trophy match against Saurashtra. With 14 points from five matches, they currently occupy fourth place in their group. To qualify for the knockout rounds, Delhi needs to win its remaining matches against Saurashtra (away) and Railway (home).
