Real Madrid put up a modest effort against fourth-tier Deportivo Minera to qualify for the round of 16 of the Copa del Rey after a 5-0 thrashing on the road.

Real took an early lead when Federico Valverde volleyed home in impressive style inside five minutes. Eduardo Camavinga doubled the lead after just eight minutes with a header, while Turkish playmaker Arda Guler added the third goal before the half-hour mark.

Luka Modric scored a wonderful goal in the far right corner after a smart attack with Brahim Diaz, causing the crowd to cheer 10 minutes after the start of the second half, then Guler sealed the win with his second goal in the match two minutes before the end.

Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti said: β€œ(Luca) is a gift to football and even more so to those who can enjoy it up close.” β€œThe fans, the players, the coach… it’s a great gift for me. The way he prepares for a match like this, like it’s a final. He’s a very important example for our youth.

β€œThe atmosphere was really good for the players. They stayed with the fans to sign shirts and that made it a great match.”

Real Madrid made changes to their lineup, with Jude Bellingham an unused substitute, but he remains too strong for Cartagena’s Deportiva Minera, who are currently top of Group 13 in Serie B.

Real have won the cup on 20 occasions, most recently in 2023 when a Rodrigo double won a 2-1 win over Osasuna.
