The Indian railway will receive 300 new diesel locomotives from the US -based WABTEC by FY28 as part of a partnership between the public and private sectors amounting to $ 2.5 billion, even with the public carrier announcement that it will take all diesel engines from its network as it approaches 100 % electricity.
Under the “Make in India” program, the Wabtec Factory in Marhowra, Bihar, is to provide 1000 locomotives a series of Diesel-Disel’s developments for emissions. This modern factory started in 2018, and in all of them, 700 locomotives have already been provided.
These high-energy locomotives-with a range of 4,500 hp and 6000 hp-were for shipping movement. However, all trains are now transported in both eastern and western freight corridors by electrical locomotives. These 35 -year -old engines will now become part of the 2500 railway fleet for use only in disasters and strategic requirements.
While getting rid of the railway with diesel engine operations, there were concerns about the future of the Marhowra factory, but Wabtec has plans to keep it functional.
“The contract stands (to deliver 300 locomotives). In the future, we will focus on local local opportunities with railways, export and railway components so that the huge infrastructure that has been built,” said Sojatha Narayan, Vice President of the India region of Wabtec.
WABTEC also explores export options with the first two of the 70 requested by Rio Tinto to sail in June this year to Africa. It is to support the railway operations of the SIMANDOS high -quality iron ore project, located in southeastern Guinea and the largest project to develop mining and infrastructure in Africa. Wabtec has an export arrangement of 140 locomotives.
“This export matter is a testimony of the quality and reliability of our products,” Narayan added.
These engines are equipped with the latest technologies, the frequency current of pilots and toilets, a refrigerator, the engine trail and smart electronics system. These locomotives are suitable for heavy transportation on mountainous terrain.
