Probably the best-selling semi-automatic espresso machine in existence, the Breville Barista Express maintains its place at the top of the list for good reason. It’s a good balance of ease, affordability, and flavor—backed by Breville’s longstanding reputation for standing up for its products. It has a built-in grinder and automatic milk frother. As a brag, I prefer High-end Breville Oracle Jet ($1,990) For bean routing, advanced programming, and a better grinder. But it’s hard to argue with the Express’ sheer value proposition when it goes on sale: At under $600, it’s a steal. Barista Express has been gracing WIRED reviewer Jolan Choccato’s table for six years, and it’s still producing great espresso.

Ninja Luxe Cafe Premier for $500 ($100 off)

If the Barista Express has stiff competition at its price point, it comes from the Ninja—an unlikely competitor in the semi-automatic espresso space. But the first espresso machine produced by Ninja, which is Lux Cafe Premieris a beginner-friendly device that pulls surprisingly excellent shots out of the gate, with a few features that similar Brevilles lack: its espresso grinder’s dosing is by weight, and it will brew something more like cold brew and drip coffee. Breville may still have the advantage in execution. But in terms of versatility and price, the Ninja is already a contender — and it actually rivals Breville in sales.

DeLonghi Revolia for $1,200 ($200 off)

The resulting espresso is not as strong and precise as my favorite classic and semi-automatic espressos. Espresso makers. But it’s smooth, reliable and easy. The taste of the coffee drip in the machine is rich and full, somewhat similar to the European Café Crema. Anyway, it’s $200 off now, which is the lowest price I’ve seen.
