Precise made no mistake in recording an impressive victory in the Bet365 fillies’ Mile at Newmarket.
Aidan O’Brien’s Moyglare Stud Stakes winner was the 5-4 favorite under Christophe Soumillon and was held off as the field moved forward in search of her top-tier stablemates Composition and Sugar Island.
After gaining cover from them, she was left to make her way into the race and demonstrated her ability as she did so without much fanfare. Hitting the front in the final furlong, she pushed on to an easy win by three and a quarter lengths from the Charlie Johnston-trained 40-1 shot Venetian Lace.
“She looks so special and everything she did from day one was so easy, so we were never sure how good she was,” O’Brien said.
“She looks serious and it reminds me of Minding, she was impressive, really unbelievable. She was going into publishing which was unusual.
“She does everything very easily. He stayed at the front a lot longer than he would have liked, but he was great with her, very confident and very smooth with her, so it’s very exciting,” Christophe said.
“She’s quite a natural athlete so you never do much with her at home, but these races like this and the Boussac race, you like to see her in them so you know what you’ve got for next year and you’re not kidding yourself next year.
“We were always hoping she would become a classic filly but here at Newmarket there’s nowhere to hide, she came out so fast and what you like about her is she sailed to the two-furlong pole and at that stage you thought she was going to win – by the time she got to the seven it was over.
“I say we’ll put her away, she looks like she can be anything and we’ll train her in the classics. The sky’s the limit for her.”
On how Precise compares to the ParisLongchamp-winning Diamond Necklace, O’Brien added: “I think they can go over the mile, and the filly in France looked very special, Christophe had never touched her and she went to France feeling unbeatable.
“He treated it like a day out to give her more experience before next year. He said he would do that after Leopardstown and ride her the same way in the Group One.”
“I was excited for a little while,” Johnston said of runner-up Venetian Lace. “I thought we gave it our all early so I knew it was going to be tough to keep those fractions going but they were coming under pressure one by one and she still had more to offer.”
“Fair play to the winner, she’s obviously a very good filly but I’m happy with our filly.
“We went straight to Chesham from her maiden and she’s been with the group company ever since. Sometimes you look when she’s on the outside and think ‘Why would I even run?’ But I never had that feeling with her, I was always confident she was one of those races.
“I’ve only been disappointed once at Doncaster with the difficult terrain on that track.
“I thought we would be in the top four but I’m not surprised to see her finish second.
“That will be the case for the year now I think. Given her pedigree, I was always thinking the Oaks for her but she’s not slow and then I think we’ll be back here in May.”
