PolitiFact CEO attacks Meta’s Zuckerberg for announcing the end of fact-checking on its platforms

The CEO of fact-checking site PolitiFact criticized Meta owner Mark Zuckerberg on Tuesday after the billionaire tech chief announced his platforms would end fact-checking.

In X’s post, Aaron condemned Sharrockman Zuckerberg’s decision to end its partnership with independent fact-checkers and accuse the company that these fact-checkers showed political bias when evaluating posts on Meta platforms.

“If Meta is upset about creating a censorship tool, she should look in the mirror,” Sharrockman said in a statement posted on X following Zuckerberg’s announcement.

For years, meta platforms — including Facebook and Instagram — have employed journalists From Politifact and other outlets to fact-check and provide context for posts shared there.

Joel Kaplan, Meta’s chief global affairs officer, told Fox News Channel’s “Fox & Friends” on Tuesday that Meta turned “to independent, third-party fact-checkers” like PolitiFact, but has since realized they are too biased. “It’s become clear that there’s a lot of political bias in what they choose to fact-check, because, essentially, they have to fact-check everything they see on the platform,” Kaplan said Tuesday.

As Zuckerberg claimed in his video, Kaplan shared that Meta is ending the fact-checking project “completely” and replacing it with a “community feedback” model similar to the one used in X, where regular accounts can contribute context and fact-checking supports.

“Instead of going to so-called experts, he instead relies on the community and people on the platform to provide their own feedback on something they’ve read,” Kaplan added.

“The decision to remove independent journalists from Facebook’s content moderation program in the United States has nothing to do with freedom of expression or censorship. Mark Zuckerberg’s decision could not be less accurate,” Sharockman said angrily.

When we make an error, there’s a process to correct those errors. There’s also a process to make sure Facebook and Meta receive the corrected information.”

Commenting on his statement, he added: “PolitiFact will have more to say on this topic. But these are my thoughts. This decision has nothing to do with freedom of expression or censorship. (PolitiFact is an original partner and has worked on this project for over 8 years).”
