Research has linked some PFAs to a variety of possible health effects, including cancer, reduce response to vaccine, reproductive issues, delay in child growth, hormonal issues and increased cholesterol levels.
The poison scientist in Quebec Mark André Werner said that the last science indicates that there may not be a safe level of exposure to PFAS.
At the same time, the chemicals are so widespread that they do not take a living near a hot point to reveal. In fact, the vast majority of Canadians have chemicals forever in their blood. The main way that many people are exposed to them is through food, especially fish, seafood and meat.
But if you live near a polluted site, your drinking water may also be an important source of exposure.
Werner said: “If in the water under the ground and you are on a special well with the same groundwater, it will become a source of concern for you, then this is certain.”
His advice is to know the levels in your drinking water, and know what local officials do to address this problem.
