Peacemaker Season 2 features a Captain Triumph Twist storyline that only hardcore comic book fans noticed

Peacemaker’s (John Cena) brother Keith (David Denman as an adult, Liam Hughes and Bryson Haney as a child) inadvertently caused a lot of mental trauma. While he’s a wonderful and supportive big brother to young Chris Smith, Keith died from the DC Universe’s main dimension when Chris accidentally punched him too hard after their brutal father Augie (Robert Patrick) forced them to fight. Meanwhile, adult keith of Twisted alternate reality Earth-X (aka Captain Triumph) remains a respected big brother. Unfortunately, he is also a virulent racist who has internalized the white supremacist ideology of the Nazi dimension. Unlike the best villain in the show, Auggiewhose alternate dimension version turns out to be a relatively good guy.

While that’s a lot of complications for one character, it turns out that Keith’s existence is much more complex and messy than that, and you’ve probably only noticed the complete cynicism of the “Peacemaker” version of the character unless you’re a long-time comic book fan. The thing is, the DC Comics version of the character is far from being a Nazi – he’s actually a staunch anti-fascist. He’s also a superhero powered by the ghost of his dead brother, an especially strange development when you remember that in “The Peacemaker,” Captain Triumph’s brother is the one haunted by his death (but specifically not powered).

In the comics, Captain Triumph is not named Keith Smith and has no relation to the Peacemaker or the White/Blue Dragon. Instead, he’s a World War II-era writer named Lance Gallant, whose brave twin brother Michael is an Air Force pilot who died in an explosion caused by a Nazi saboteur. Lance witnesses Michael’s death and his desire for revenge is sensed by supernatural creatures called the Fates. They connect Michael’s ghost to Lance, enabling the twins to join into a single entity that has a combination of classic flying brick powers and ghostly stealth abilities.

Although his comic book connection to the Peacemaker is tenuous at best, it is understood that James Gunn chose to use Captain Triumph as Keith’s superhero alias. After all, Lance Gallant is a mysterious enough character that he’s always unlikely to be adapted into the DCU as it is, but his backstory as someone who is literally haunted by his dead brother fits the themes of Chris Smith’s tragic life greatly.
