OpenAI updates ChatGPT search with voice queries and more

On the 8th day of Christmas… The 8th day of the “12 Days of OpenAI” (a series of holiday-related announcements from the company behind ChatGPT), OpenAI took its now familiar approach live feed On YouTube to announce a series of search-related updates to its premium AI-powered chatbot.

Specifically, OpenAI has just revealed three major updates to its system Web search experience inside ChatGPTwhich was officially launched in October 2024 after operating as a separate device, An invite-only preview site called SearchGPT has existed for several months prior.

Here’s what’s changed:

1. ChatGPT search is Now available to all users globallyeven free users – when logged in. You’ll need to create a free account to get it, but once you do, you can tap the little globe icon below the Create bar to activate it and get updates and information directly from the web in your replies, unlike before, when it was only available to paid subscribers. On ChatGPT Plus plans and above (Pro, Edu, Team, and Enterprise).
2. OpenAI has updated the search results experience in ChatGPT so that it stands out Links to web pages They will appear like Netflix or travel booking sites before The rest of the generated text answers are written by the chatbot.
3. Arguably the most impressive and biggest update is this Users can now Search by voice queries When Advanced Audio Mode is activated (turn it on by pressing the Audio Waveform button in the compose bar at the bottom, which looks like a series of parallel vertical lines). This allows the user to request up-to-date information on travel destinations, the latest weather forecasts, and even ideas for activities (as well as anything else in the world that doesn’t have explicit sexual content – ChatGPT search does not offer this functionality). ChatGPT’s voice assistant will respond with the voice you select to use from among the ten preset voice style options.

Also part of the second update: OpenAI has integrated the ChatGPT mobile apps for iOS and Android with maps for those platforms, so that if you’re searching for nearby restaurants, you’ll use the system’s map app on your device (Apple Maps or Google Maps, respectively) to bring up a menu Results.

All in all, it’s been a series of useful, if not great, improvements that should help ChatGPT users on the go more than anything else.
