Founder of OpenAI Sam Altman The new year began with a short message raising questions and concerns about the future of artificial intelligence.
In his first tweet of 2025, Altman posted a cryptic poem about approaching the “singularity,” which refers to the point at which technology becomes so advanced that it exceeds humanity’s control, potentially wreaking havoc on human civilization.
“I’ve always wanted to write a story with six words, and here they are: Near singularity; not clear which way,” Altman said in his post.

A few minutes later, the tech entrepreneur revealed that the meaning of the verse was mysterious even to him. The message may also be about the simulation hypothesis, Altman said.
“(Presumably it has to do with either 1. the simulation hypothesis or 2. the impossibility of knowing when the critical moment in takeoff actually occurs, but I like that this works in many other ways as well.)” the post said. . The term “take-off” likely refers to the point at which the technological singularity begins.
The simulation hypothesis, the theory that humans exist in a computer simulation, is generally considered less realistic than the idea of a technological singularity. It is considered a philosophical discussion rather than a scientific or political discussion.

OpenAI was founded by Altman and other technology entrepreneurs in 2015, including Tesla CEO Elon Musk. Musk left the company in 2018, dissatisfied with the company’s leadership and accomplishments.
In 2024, Musk accused OpenAI of developing artificial general intelligence (AGI), or the ability of a machine to perform any task a computer can do. SpaceX founder claimed that OpenAI’s GPT-4 language model has achieved AGI.
OpenAI has denied that GPT-4 is capable of general artificial intelligence, but Altman recently hinted that it could take off in 2025.
“What are you excited about in 2025?” Gary Tan, CEO of Y Combinator, asked Altman in a YouTube interview on November 8. “What’s coming?”
“AGI,” Altman replied. “I’m excited about it.”
