(Reuters) – OpenAI and Japanese group SoftBank will commit $19 billion in funding for Stargate, a joint venture to develop artificial intelligence data centers in the United States, The Information newspaper reported on Wednesday.

The ChatGPT maker will own a 40% stake in Stargate, and will serve as an extension of OpenAI, the report said, citing OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, who spoke to colleagues. The report added that his comments implied that SoftBank would also receive a 40% interest.

OpenAI and SoftBank did not immediately respond to Reuters’ requests for comment.

US President Donald Trump announced on Tuesday that OpenAI, SoftBank Group and Oracle will unveil Stargate and invest $500 billion over the next four years to help the United States stay ahead of China and other competitors in the global AI race.

Stargate will initially deploy $100 billion, with the remainder of the funding expected to be provided over the next four years. The project is led by SoftBank and OpenAI.
