One of the dead and thousands of evictions with the spread of wild fires in France

An elderly woman died and another person was lost after she invaded a huge fire in parts of southern France, which destroyed homes and compels thousands to flee.

The authorities said that the woman died in her home, and seven firefighters were treated for inhaling smoke and one person is still missing. Two people in the hospital, one of them is in critical condition.

The fire broke out on Tuesday near the village of La Ribau in the Aude area, and more than 13,000 hectares (50 square miles) were already burned – a larger area of Paris – making it the largest fire in France this year.

More than 1,800 firefighters were deployed, supported by 500 vehicles, in the area.

The affected main villages are Lagrase, Fabrezan, Tourissan, Coustouge, Saint-Laurent-De-La-CabRERISSE.

Officials say the fire is progressing quickly, driven by strong winds, dry plants and hot summer weather.

Jack Peru, the mayor of the village of Junuire, was informed, where at least four houses were burned, Le Monde that about 80 % of the village had been burned.

“It is dramatic. Black, the trees are completely charred,” he said.

The pictures appear black, burned cars and people sat on the beaches three hours away as thick black clouds were still visible.

“This is an unprecedented catastrophe,” Eric Brocardi, a spokesman for the firefighters, told RTL Radio.

At least 25 homes and more than 2,500 homes without electricity were destroyed. The authorities closed roads throughout the region and warned that they were still very dangerous for the residents who fled on Tuesday evening to return to their homes.

President Emmanuel Macron expressed his support for firefighters and local officials on X, saying that all government resources are fill out. The residents urged to follow the evacuation orders and practice “maximum caution.”

Prime Minister Francois Bayro is expected to visit the affected area later on Wednesday.

Lucy Roche, Secretary -General of the Oud area, said that the firefighters were watching the perimeter of the fire to prevent the outbreak of the new disease. She said: “The fire is advancing in an area where all conditions are ripened until it is presented.”

The area has become increasingly vulnerable in recent years due to low rainfall and the removal of chrome farms, which once helped slow the spread of forest fires.
