Government media reported on Thursday that North Korea’s supreme leader Kim Jong Un has officially opened a new beach resort in the country’s coastal Wonsan Kalma – after six years of its completion.

According to the National News Agency, the tourist area provides facilities of sunbathing along a four -kilometer beach and various sports services, entertainment, commercial and public services, in addition to a wide range of accommodations throughout the year.

KCNA confirmed that the new beach resort is open to local visitors as of July 1, but there was no mention to allow international tourists.

North Korea closed its borders in 2020 at the beginning of the Covid-19s, but it has slowly raised restrictions since 2023, allowing Russian visitors the following year.

Russian tourist groups were allowed to enter North Korea, but its capital is usually closed to regular tourism, although in April, it hosted a marathon event with foreign participants.

Kcna said that the Russian ambassador to North Korea and embassy employees attended as private guests during the opening ceremony of the beach resort.

Russia and North Korea are participating in a partnership to develop tourism in both countries and restart the direct passenger train service between its capitals, Moscow and Pyongyang, for the first time since 2020.
