When Zerodha, co -founder of Zerodha, asked how to break YouTube to sell shirts, YouTube CEO had a sharp response: “If your only goal in life is to sell shirts, you are also better carefully and disturbing content.”

Speaking during an explicit conversation, he asked Cathm, “What is the YouTube algorithm to an ordinary person like me, and what can I do today for success?” His assumption: He wants to sell shirts and needs content that pays sales.

Mohan’s advice was clear – he did not chase the algorithm. He said, “You will not build a fan base if you are not authentic. Fans discover so very quickly.” Emotion, not the product, is what succeeds in permanent success.

He emphasized that YouTube rewards the creators who honestly care about their content. He said: “We are working with athletes, musicians and teachers … It comes very quickly when they talk about something they really raise. It is not only about throwing a piece of content.”

Mohan explained that the YouTube algorithm is less than playing a formula and more than that of building long -term participation. “It is slow burning,” he pointed out. “Select expectations with your audience about what your content will be, then delivery. The algorithm is just a reflection of this audience.”

For Kamath – or anyone looking to convert YouTube into a sales channel – the message was directly: the content could not be just a marketing tool. To sell anything, and even shirts, you need to appear with real passion, originality and patience.

Mohan said: “This is the difference between a person who leaves after a few months and a person who really builds something.”
