Next year has a lot of what you’d expect in terms of big Hollywood releases. Sequels, reboots, superheroes, etc. But one genre that has continued success, but is often a bit overlooked, is horror – and 2025 will bring it in terms of horror. There are big-budget monster movies, mid-budget low-budget films, returning franchises, franchises hoping to get started, and even a few major filmmakers dipping their toes in the blood.

Every year, horror movies are a huge hit and people act like it’s a surprise. Well, 2025 is the year it won’t be a surprise. One of the biggest upcoming movies is Leigh Whannell’s The wolf manGuillermo del Toro FrankensteinAnd Maggie Gyllenhaal The bride. What are we waiting for?

Along with all the potentially great horror movies, 2025 should bring another big year for superhero movies thanks Captain America: Brave New World, Superman, Fantastic Four: The First Steps, And more. (Actually, that’s a can of worms we’ll get into in another article.) Additionally, 2025 will bring many films that feel like products of another generation. Movies that we really want to love and be excited about, but we also have a lot of hesitation about.

So what are we waiting for? To be a pleasant surprise. This is because, on paper, many of these things are more than questionable. For example, films like The Karate Kid: Legends and Tron: Ares. We love those original films, but will 2025 audiences go to theaters to see them continued? There’s this live action snow white A remake that feels like it was actually released years ago. Speaking of which, does the world need a live-action remake of Lilo and Stitch and How to train your dragon? Even some of the biggest movies, from VIII Mission impossible And the seventh Jurassic ParkEveryone feels a little behind the times. We want them all to be good! We hope they are. But we all know how this usually happens.

Unconventional wisdom

Most years, genre films like the ones we cover on this site take a backseat to a more dramatic level when awards season rolls around. But in recent years, these films have continued to feature in major awards conversations: Everything Everywhere Once, The Shape of Water, Dune: Part 2, Black Pantheretc. We feel like this year could be another big year to change that narrative. When filmmakers like del Toro, Coogler, Soderbergh, Danny Boyle, and Bong Joon-ho make weird sci-fi or horror films, you get the feeling that these films might break through the awards barrier.

People to follow

James Gunn – Gunn remains one of the last major filmmakers, and now studio executives, interacting with fans on an almost daily basis. And with him Superman A movie coming to theaters, as well as several other DC projects coming to fruition, has its social media to follow.

Michael Giacchino -The award-winning composer is very good at checking out his social media and his works Fantastic Four Preparing for release, let alone going to the director, it’s always nice and fun to see what he’s up to.

John M. Chu – He released one of the biggest films of the year with evil It will do so again in 2025 with… Evil: for good. Plus, after those two hits, you knew he could probably do anything he wanted next. Maybe he’ll break it down online once it happens.

Jason Blum -If 2025 is the year of horror, you’d better keep an eye on one of the most prolific horror producers of all time. He has got his hands on many of the above mentioned films.

Companies to watch

Blumhouse – Once again, the sheer amount of great horror coming out in 2025 is noteworthy, and one of the companies directly responsible is Blumhouse, especially since it’s now teaming up with James Wan’s Atomic Monster.

Sony Animation Sony is one of the most underrated animation houses, and while 2025 was supposed to be the year… Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-VerseUnfortunately this no longer happens. But still in business, so is A Ghostbusters Movie and more, it is worth keeping an eye on.

Netflix – Since Netflix doesn’t often date or announce many of its biggest movies in advance, it can be easy to forget that the streamer is producing some of the biggest movies in the world. Next year will continue this trend with films from the Russo Brothers, del Toro and others, and you can be sure that more announcements will be coming.

A far-fetched bet

In 2024, I expected one of many The high-profile sequels scheduled for release will receive big prizes. And that was accurate, thanks to Denis Villeneuve. For 2025, I think this will also happen again, but you can’t make the same prediction twice. So, for this year’s long shot, I think one or more of the big movies on paper – the superhero movie, Jurassic Park, Mission ImpossiblePixar and Disney remakes – will do the opposite, and bomb badly.
