Newcastle United have appointed Ross Wilson as sporting director after triggering his release clause with Nottingham Forest.

Wilson, who previously played for Southampton and Rangers, fills the position vacated by Paul Mitchell at the end of last season after the Newcastle board identified him as the right candidate to lead the club’s recruitment and sporting strategy.

The 41-year-old leaves his role as Forest’s head of football after 18 months at the City Ground. Newcastle says the terms of his release will remain confidential.

Manager Eddie Howe is said to be excited at the prospect of working with Wilson, who is seen as someone who can continue to grow the club off the field and ensure Newcastle can compete in every way possible.

At the clubs Wilson has led, he has helped build structures, establish new procedures that directly benefit the football side of the business and implement a clear and consistent strategy going forward.
