In the past few years, I felt that Chromebooks had hit a plateau. Chromeos is a strange but mature platform at this stage, and Google has continued to add smart and useful features regularly. But the devices felt a large extent, with few exceptions. Most Chromebook books at this stage are utilitarian devices that accomplish the task but inspire a little excitement, and I have found that most of the books of Intel -based Chromebooks do not reach a working day before the battery death.
But earlier this summer, Lenovo released a new Chromebook book With the MediaTek’s Kompanio Ultra 910 chip, instead of the usual Intel fare. Now Acer does the same with the latest Chromebook Plus Spin 514, a laptop that is easier to say it should reach 17 hours of battery life – a number that this model cannot hit and the aforementioned Lenovo. Previously, the MediaTek -working devices on the weaker mobile flakes were almost not enough, but Kompanio Ultra 910 is a completely different monster. The performance and efficiency set provided by Spin 514 makes it one of the best Chromebook books that you used a while ago.
Between its strong slice, the wonderful battery life and the solid devices, the Acer’s Chromebook Plus Spin 514 is one of the best laptops that you can purchase.
- Wonderful battery life
- Excellent performance
- Solid keyboard, tracking and display panel
- Reasonably thin and light
- beloved
- I wish there were USB-C ports on both sides
- Specific amplifiers and the web camera are fine
Device design
Chromebook SPIN 514 feels as if many ACER computers have tried over the years (CP514-5hn is defined for this particular model, but we will only call it Spin 514 from here to the outside). It is strong and built well while still feels upset. Do not reach the “Premium” laptop standards, but it is ultimately the most beautiful cute chromebook. I admire the silver colors system instead of most of the faded gray chrome books that come, and the laptop cover contains a thirsty and well -sliced edge, giving it some visual taste.
It is also a relatively slim laptop (0.61 inches) and light (3 pounds). It does not pay the envelope, but it is also worse and lower than many cheaper Chromebook devices. “Premium is almost a bad place. The same applies to the keyboard and the tracking plate – they are wide and comfortable, and the keys have a lot of click travel. It is not the best keyboard I used ever, but I am happy to take advantage of hours at the same time. A touch screen with a 1,920 x 1200 shining, sharp, colored and very fun screen to look at long sessions. However, it also contains large tires over the screen and be and beyond them. Again, almost installment.
514 spin has solid contact options, as well. On one side, you will find the USB-C 3.2 ports and headphone socket, while the other side walks in the old school with two USB-A 3.2 ports. I hope there is one on each side so that you can connect a charger on the left or right, but unfortunately. My only real Quibled is that if you use a screen with a liquidated laptop, both Jacks USB-C will be taken. The HDMI connection was useful for this joint scenario.
As the name suggests, SPIN 514 contains 360 degrees hinges that allow you to use it in tablet mode, with a touch screen as a main entrance. I have long believed that transformable laptops really do not really provide any useful solution to the vast majority of people, and I still feel the same way. But the hinges feel wonderful. I have a lot of experience in this section. The USI 2.0 pen that you had worked on hand without having to pair or set up, which was appropriate. If you are the type that will benefit from it, the Spin 514 takes a trick.
In general, SPIN 514 lands approximately as I expected a $ 700 laptop in terms of device quality. It is good in a good way – there were no great experiences in my test, regardless of loudspeakers, which contain very little of the bright and somewhat sound when listening to music.
Training and performance
Before diving on how to work Spin 514 for me, a quick word about configurations. The release that you tested retail for $ 700 and will be sold through Best Buy. This setting contains Mediaatek Kompanio Ultra 910 mentioned above, along with 12 GB RAM and 256 GB of storage space. Acer will sell itself a $ 750 model with a 2880 x 1800 and 16 GB screen, but it should be identical to the form he experienced.
Chromeos works well enough on various Intel chips that are commonly used. One of the long -time Chromebooks devices, Lenovo Ideapad 5I, is still used by Core i3 from early 2023, and the task is accomplished. But moving to Kompanio Ultra 910 based to Mediaatek has sparked the performance bar, because SPIN 514 may be the most response Chromebook book that you tried. There is a hint of slowdown or hiccups that still occur on Intel -based models if you have a lot of windows or open applications. Rarely you need to re -download the tab and restart them quickly on the rare occasion they do. The playback or video is never overcome regardless of what I was doing, and Android applications such as Lightroom worked quickly and smoothly as well.
Perhaps the most important of this is what today is the fact that Kompanio Ultra 910 should keep FLIP 514 the feeling of code and strong for years to come. There is more space for this slide to deal with increased performance requirements over the years. The standards of the Android version of Geekbench 6 help clarify this: SPIN 514 2,526 record in the mono -core CPU test, 7,687 on multi -core and 18020 in the GPU test. For comparison, the recently released Chromebook 514 with Intel Core 3550, 4,407 and 5,932 respectively. I don’t think criteria like Geekbench are the end of everything from everything, but it is at least measured to clarify the benefits of staying away from Intel.
It has long rushed around the relatively medium battery life on the books of Chromebooks that operate in the Intel, and this is another place in which the Mediaatek chip is greatly assisted. The 514 video takes place in my test for more than 14 hours with a little running out of the battery. The daily workflow of tons of chrome tabs, various chat applications, YouTube, Todoist, and a handful of Android apps have used more resources, but I can still get a full working day with the battery to spare it. This is not something I said about many recent Chromebook books. The only warning is that the battery life will definitely achieve great success if you choose the model with a high -resolution screen.
Cromos and Jimini
I wrote a lot about the experience of chromos and Jimini last year when I am Browse Samsung’s Galaxy Chromebook PlusAnd basically all you said and then applies here. But to summarize: Chromeos is very mature and extremely stable at this stage, and Google has built a lot of smart features over the years to make it more than a “web browser” as mentioned previously. Of course, Chromeos is still a mainly based system, as Android applications allow you to access things that you may not find in the browser. There are also a lot of well -improved web applications for chromos, and Google documents have a comprehensive mode of non -connection at this stage. Chromeos also wears well with Android phones and adds features such as shared notifications and some applications flow directly to the laptop.
Of course, Gemini is also a large part of the equation – but if you are not a great admirer of artificial intelligence tools, it is also easy to ignore. There are small claims about the operating system, but nothing pulls your attention away from what you are working on. And if you want to dive into what is going on around the Gemini, the Chromebook like Spin 514 is a good choice because you get 12 months of Google Ai Pro plan For free. This usually costs $ 20 a month and provides 2 terabytes of tablet storage alongside Gemini 2.5 Pro in search, Gemini, Gemini in Gmail, Google Docs, access to the Veo-Image-Jeneration tool and more. Given that 2 TB of the Google Motor store costs $ 10 a month on its own, this represents a strong feature. But it is also worth remembering that as soon as that year is over, you are on a hook to pay the price of this plan yourself.
Pricing and final ideas
My only real QUIBBLE with 514 rotation is its price. At $ 700, we pay the highest that anyone should spend on the Chromebook. Although the most powerful chip and long battery life will deserve all this effort for some people, Acer itself provides some strong competition with standard Chromebook Plus 514 that appeared this summer. It contains an Intel chip, so the battery life and performance are not at the same level as Spin 514, but it is also half the price literally at $ 350. If you are going to get away from the charger for a few hours every time, it is difficult not to recommend this device instead. I will post more details about this laptop in our guide to the best Chromebook devices very soon if you want to know more.
So, while this may not be the Chromebook I recommend it everyoneIt is a strong competitor for the best distinctive Chromebook that you can buy. If you are looking to use this laptop throughout the day, every day, it may be useful to get the additional money to improve performance, battery life and longevity you will get from Spin 514.
