So how did a project like this reach you? You are now a character in this world, in this type of story novel, if you will. Do people raise you your thoughts? Are you still doing the same research that you have been doing for years and only stumbled through these things yourself? Does your product bring you ideas? How does this work?
It is a kind of all of the above. I certainly reached the point where people put me things. I have no … this is actually not true. There are two great types for us about production now, but before that – I was about to say I didn’t do it – but in terms of guidance, I did not do anything that was completely shown. This includes a light -lit green document in the Crypto Turey game today. It is like, come on. I do not give *** about that. These things are difficult to make. I must be in a state of love madly. So we are looking, Stephen and I, and one of our most truly trusted colleagues is the head of our research. His name is Lucas Cox. We look, look and look.
I encountered this during a rabbit hole that I was going to in December 2020. I was editing “Sasquatch” and “Bob Ross” at that time and I know they will end the following year. I really love La Noir Stories – “The Long Goodbye”, “Sunseet Boulevard”, “Chinatown”, “Mulholland Drive” – I love these things and I always wanted to make one. Thus I just went on “La Noir in the form of a documentary” Hunt, if you will, and I ended up in the old La Times articles about this story. And immediately strike with this thing, Oh my God, if I can make this, I feel that this can be really special. But I knew that all of this depends on an interview with David Scance because I feel as if you were to tell a story like this and really face that you have gone deeply and be worthy at the time of anyone, you must have the man.
So we wrote to him in prison and arrived on the phone with my producers and agreed to conduct an interview, if you arrived in prison for photography with him or if he went out, because the conditional release was on the table at that point. Matthew did not know, but he was on the table. And because it was already the peak of Covid, no one was leading to prisons to shoot. California specifically does not allow you to submit specific corresponding requests for the inmate.
So I knew somewhat that we would not enter, and you needed it, if this interview would happen, to go out. He did not go out for two and a half years. We started to make this, in fact, by the end of 2021, and we have informed that he would get a condition of release of the conditional in late 2022, and that was the year of elections. Each ruler will cancel the conditional listening sessions that lead to elections because they must make it clear that they are difficult in the crime. This is what they all run in some capabilities.
Certainly it was truly extracted and felt, Wow, I may have something that will not come out of it, and I will be on a hook with HBO and these people will never hate me and do not want to work with me again. Then about six months later, I was driving the car, I just left a friend. We were having lunch and Stephen calling me, my producer, and said: “He goes out within the next 48 hours. He got the conditional release.” So we immediately need to fill the crew. I mean, Dubai Ports live in New York. (David) was imprisoned outside Sacramento. The next morning, Stephen and I traveled to Sacramento. People on aircraft, people drive them, and the equipment is examined from rental houses, and by the next night, we were sitting in a hotel ready only.
That morning, I can’t remember what time we entered the car waiting arena in prison. I don’t think it was 4:30, but shortly after that. Perhaps it was around 5 am. We sat, sat, took over the sun, and pulled others to the parking lot, waiting for a person waiting for them. We see correction officers withdraw to go to work for this day and some who examine people in the administrative building. Then finally around 7:45, people come, search for it and think, Oh my God, there is it. He sees us and has a big smile on his face and points to us, and we are rolling all the time. And he entered the car, and I do not even know that we were three minutes away from the road outside the parking lot in prison when he only did, on his own, prepared the bodies and burning, I do not want to say everything, but not to ask a question, raised a lot. I just thought, Holy F ***, this will be crazy for two days.
O man, this is an incredible story.
