Devin Mubama scored his first two goals for England Under-21s, but Ethan Nwaneri was the architect of a 4-0 win over Moldova, which saw them top their European Championship qualifying group with a second successive win.

Arsenal attacking midfielder Nwanyere was given license to roam in the No.10 position and provided assists for the opening goals scored by Chelsea winger Jimmy Gittens and Stoke striker Mbama in Chisinau.

He also passed the through ball that saw debutant Josh King brought down for a penalty kick in the 74th minute, which Mbama converted.

It was Nwaniri’s breakthrough in the 28th minute, as he cleared the ball, which took two defenders with him and allowed Gittins to cut in on his right foot, beating Victor Durdon at the near post with a shot that the goalkeeper should have done better.

Everton winger Tyler Deepling was starting to become more influential, winning a free-kick that Nwaniri headed over, but it was the Arsenal player who continued to dominate, and early in the second half, the duo combined to get the latter past two defenders, but he ran off before he could cross or shoot.

Jobe Bellingham fired a left-footed shot wide of goal before Birmingham goalkeeper James Beadle made his only intervention by curling a corner kick under the bar.

In the 68th minute, Nwanyere sent a clever reverse pass to Mbama, who handled the ball once and beat the goalkeeper for pace, before curling the penalty well into the spot, meaning that although Dordon guessed correctly, he was unable to reach it.

Brooke Norton Coffey forced a good save from the goalkeeper before Rico Luis picked the ball up from deep in the 89th minute and ran in behind the defense before beating Durdon inside the left post from the edge of the box.
