Italian club Milan confirmed this morning the dismissal of its coach Paulo Fonseca after six months in office.

The Portuguese claimed he had been sent off when he left San Siro following the 1-1 draw with Roma on Sunday evening, with the club’s official announcement coming hours later.

Milan is expected to appoint Sergio Conceicao as his replacement.

A club statement read: “AC Milan announces that Paulo Fonseca has been relieved of his duties as coach of the men’s first team. The club expresses its gratitude to Paulo for his outstanding professionalism and wishes him the best in his future endeavours.

The weekend impasse leaves the Rossoneri in eighth place in the Serie A table, 14 points behind joint leaders Atalanta and Napoli.

Fonseca coached Milan in 24 matches in total, winning only 12, the most notable of which was the 3-1 victory over Real Madrid in the Champions League.

Conceição has extensive experience in the Italian League, having played for Lazio, Parma and Inter. He resigned as Porto coach in June.
