When James Gunn and Peter Safran got the keys to DC Studios, things seemed very clear. Matt Reeves was making his own Batman movies, and they would live *there* — and Gunn and Safran were shepherding the new Batman into the DC universe, and he would live with them *here.* At least, That was the plan in 2023. Since then, Reeves has become… Batman sequel It was returned twiceGan and Safran are gone To shoot and cast Multiple projects, and now there’s a question – especially among fans – as to whether or not having two separate Batman films makes sense.
So far, Gunn has stood solidly behind Reeves So far to defend the delay From 2027 Batman Part Two and Introducing Batman into his own DC Universe, via animation Commando Creatures. But while speaking at the Golden Globes this week, Reeves himself seemed to acknowledge that Batman, played by Robert Pattinson, could become Batman in the DC Universe.
“It really comes down to whether or not it makes sense,” Reeves said. Reporter Josh Horowitz. “What was great was that there was a story I wanted to tell with what we call the ‘epic crime saga’ and all that, which is the thrust of what we wanted to do. And it was important for me to be able to play that. James and Peter were really great about it and allowed us So what does the future hold? I can’t really tell you I have no idea right now except that my head is down right now about getting… Batman Part Two Shooting and making it something really special is of course the most important thing.
Whether it makes sense or not, it probably comes down to two things: timing and story. The timing at which Reeves will fire Batman Part Two later this year for an October 2027 release. By then, several movies and shows will have been released in the DC Universe and Gunn and Safran will have to decide if they should write their own Batman story (The brave and the boldlikely directed by Andy Muschietti) or incorporating Reeves’ filmography.
But also, Reeves is clear here that he’s allowed to do whatever he wants. And what he wants, a Batman story to tell, may not fit the style or tone of Gunn and Safran. This is a consideration too. So, as Reeves points out here, it’s possible, but they’ll wait and see.
Speaking of waiting, Reeves also admitted that the delay to his film wasn’t ideal. “There’s a lot of stuff going on and it took longer than I wanted it to,” he said. “But I’m also very passionate about what we do, so I can’t wait to share that with everyone.”
He also said that he hopes the main villain will be a surprise and that the film won’t be exactly what most people expect. “The story is a continuation in one way and completely different in another,” Reeves said. “(It’s) going to show different sides of Rob. I think it’s going to be very exciting.”
