Matt Damon and Brad Pitt adapted the 2002 film into an ocean encounter

Making movies can be a difficult and unpredictable business, so it makes sense that before beginning principal photography, many directors try to assemble a team of familiar faces and proven talent. John Ford collaborated frequently with producer Merian C. Cooper; Screenwriters like Nunnally Johnson, Dudley Nichols, and Frank S. George Clooney’s “Confessions of a Dangerous Mind” was a bold choice for a directorial debut. The screenplay, written by Charlie Kaufman, is an adaptation of Chuck Barris’s unauthorized gonzo autobiography in which the “Dating Game” author and “The Gong Show” host claims he was a secret CIA assassin. Clooney cast Sam Rockwell as Paris and Drew Barrymore as his girlfriend, but he found a way to engage his “Ocean’s Eleven” co-conspirators in ways both large and hilariously small.

Pitt and Damon briefly appear as competitors in the “Dating Game.” Boys don’t get any lines. They just sit and listen to their competitor give a ridiculous answer to a ridiculous question from the single woman on the other side of the wall. The joke here is that Clooney had Pitt and Damon wear funky hairpieces and loud ’60s-’70s clothing for the flash-and-miss appearance (Which they did as a service To the manager). Not surprisingly, this moment made me laugh a lot when I saw it theatrically. Clooney expanded the scope of the “Ocean’s Eleven” reunion by giving Julia Roberts a pivotal role as untrustworthy CIA agent Patricia Watson. She’s getting actual stripes and more glamorous clothes.

Clooney subsequently directed eight films and cast Damon in starring roles twice (“The Monuments Men” and “Suburbicon”). As for Roberts and Pitt, he has continued to work with them as an actor, but has not directed them again yet. Maybe it’s just a matter of scheduling and not having the right materials available to them. Or maybe they’re just divas.
