Here’s what Martin Luther King III said amid Donald Trump’s inauguration

On Sunday, January 19th. NBC News Published an exclusive 31-minute interview with King III. About two minutes into the interview, the third king was asked to share what he thought his father would think about the current state of the country.

“Even I, as the son, can only speculate,” the Third King explained. “None of us actually know (but) what I can say is…we’ve seen a lot of chaos. Some are constructive. Some are devastating. I think my father will always be interested in how do we create constructive engagement, how do we build our beloved community?

The third king explained that his father would feel “very disappointed” that the country had reached what it is now. However, he doesn’t think his father would be “surprised.” Additionally, the son of the civil rights leader explained that when tragedy strikes the nation, individuals come together. Once that’s done, “everyone goes back to their corners.” However, he would like to see unity and community continue after the tragedy.

per NBC New YorkElsewhere during the interview, King III was asked to share what he’d be paying attention to amid Trump’s inauguration speech.

“He said he wanted to create some (sense of) unity,” King III said, referring to Trump. “Now what that means is that you have to be in dialogue with everyone. If you really want to unite the nation so that it is a manifestation of what we call ourselves…we do not reflect the ‘United States of America’ at this moment…”

Martin Luther King Jr.’s daughter, Bernice King, also spoke amid Donald Trump’s inauguration

Monday, January 19th. NBC News Published an exclusive video interview with Bernice King. During the conversation, she talked about Trump’s inauguration on Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

“It’s great that this happens on the king’s holiday, the investiture, because it reminds us of the king,” she said. “It brings us back to King. It says: When we move forward, we have to do it in the spirit of King.”

Furthermore, for those feeling “defeated” amid Trump’s return to office, King also shared a few words of advice.

“We have to have a strategy. We have missed the strategy. We have missed the spirit of Dr. King,” she explained. “The spirit of Dr. King is nonviolence. Nonviolence is not just an attitude, it is a mindset. For us, we define it as a way of thinking, speaking, acting and engaging that is centered About love and lead to personal, cultural and societal transformation.
