Madagascar’s presidency said that an “attempt to illegally and coercively seize power” was taking place in the African country, without providing any evidence, a day after some soldiers joined a protest movement that began last month.

In a statement on Sunday, President Andry Rajoelina accused unidentified parties of attempting a coup, a day after soldiers publicly stood with protesters demanding his resignation.

Troops of the elite CAPSAT unit that helped Rajoelina seize power in a 2009 coup have urged fellow soldiers to disobey orders and support the youth-led protests, which began on September 25 and pose the most serious challenge to Rajoelina’s rule since his re-election in 2023.
