Madagascar’s embattled leader refuses to resign as unrest deepens

Madagascar President Andry Rajoelina said Monday that he is in a “safe place” after being the subject of an assassination attempt, rejecting calls to resign amid worsening unrest that pushed him into hiding. The twice-delayed speech was his first since the rebel army unit backed anti-government protests and reports he had fled abroad.
