Jack Wilshere was confirmed this morning as the new manager of League One side Luton Town.
The former England midfielder began his career with Luton as a young boy before moving to Arsenal, for whom he made nearly 200 appearances before playing for West Ham, Bournemouth and AGF Aarhus.
Wilshere, 33, told the club’s official website: “It is a great honor and privilege to be appointed manager of Luton Town.
“It feels like a complete moment for me. I was eight when I first came to Luton as a boy, so I guess you could say it was fated that my first full-time managerial position would be at this club.
“I couldn’t be happier to be here and I can’t wait to take over this football club.”
Wilshere was inspired by Luton’s story
Having moved from non-league to the Premier League before suffering successive relegations, the Hatters now sit in 11th place in the third tier of English football.
“The story of this club inspires me,” added Wilshere, who will replace Matt Bloomfield in the role. “Built on faith, unity and hard work.
“The club has shown amazing character on and off the pitch in recent times and I am honored to be leading this group into the future.
“There is still a lot of season to play for, and I am excited to get to work, put my stamp on things, and move this club forward in a positive direction.
“I want to give Luton fans a team they can be proud of, and the work to achieve that starts today.”
Smart move in hiring Powell as an assistant
Wilshere will be assisted by experienced coach Chris Powell.
Gary Sweet, Luton chief executive, said: “Jack’s passion, intelligence and modern approach to the game align perfectly with Luton Town’s values and ambitions. His experience at the highest level and commitment to developing talent make him the perfect fit for our next chapter.”
“He impressed everyone involved in our extensive selection process with his passion for football, his determination to succeed in management and his in-depth knowledge of all things Luton Town.
“It started when he was a very young boy in our youth system, and continued throughout his life, always living locally and with close friends who were long-term season ticket holders at Kenilworth Road.
“It was during his spell with our first team at The Brush in the summer of 2022 that he re-acclimated to the club, and realized the time was right to pursue a coaching path, which brought him back to Arsenal, where the world of course saw him emerge as a generational midfield talent.
“Luton has always been part of his journey, and as a club renowned for giving young coaches their break in management, we are very pleased to welcome him back.
“He already knows a number of our team members and as a board we are all excited at the prospect of seeing his career progress alongside someone as respected in the game as Chris.”
Wilshere will take charge of the Hatters for the first time when they host Mansfield on Saturday.
