Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer Lixiang Auto Inc (Li Auto) has opened its first overseas R&D center in Munich, Germany, as the company continues to boost its overseas sales.
Li Auto said the aim of the R&D center is to cooperate with European component manufacturers in developing next-generation technologies, including those related to artificial intelligence, power semiconductors, intelligent chassis systems, electric transmission systems and overall vehicle design.
With the new R&D centre, the automaker also aims to gain a better understanding of the European market and develop products that are more “compatible” with European automotive regulations and consumer preferences.
“This R&D center marks the official start of Li Auto’s global strategy,” Li Auto CEO Ma Donghui said in a statement. “It will also serve as a cornerstone of our core AI strategy, with nearly half of our R&D investments currently directed toward… Artificial intelligence techniques.
Founded in 2015, Li Auto is one of China’s most successful EV startups, with global sales last year growing 33% to 500,508 battery electric vehicles (BEVs) – bringing the company’s cumulative sales to 1,133,872 units.
