Lamont Roach is still getting plenty of mileage from the 12-round draw he had against WBA lightweight champion Gervonta Davis earlier this year on March 1.
Roche (25-1-2, 10 KOs) complains about this tank “Disrespect” for him. He does not say what Davis said or did to upset him, other than ignoring his attempts at an immediate rematch.
Living outside the clouds
Realistically, Roach should be grateful to Davis for hand-picking him from the super featherweight division to defend his WBA lightweight title last March. He didn’t have to do that. Roche is not ranked at 135 and has not defeated anyone in the lightweight division to earn a title shot. Tank did his favor, and he should be grateful.
Lamont Roche said InsideringshowSpeaking of which, Gervonta Davis did something that caused him to feel disrespected, even though he did him a tremendous favor by being selected from the 130-pound division.
Fans on social media think Roach is on “Draw a round,” Tank Davis’ name is constantly being thrown around to get attention for himself in a secondhand way. They are Tired of Roche constantly dropping names, he saw it as his way to the top Artificially Raise your status without having to earn It’s the hard way by beating top lightweights like Andy Cruz, Abdullah Mason, and Shakur Stevenson.
What “disrespect” really means here
“He actually respects me,” Roach said. “Personally, I don’t. I don’t play like that. You don’t respect me, and I don’t respect you.”
Roche wanted the second fight, and you can’t blame him. He reportedly received $1.5 million to $1.7 million from fighting Gervonta. That’s the money he’s not expected to get in his next fight against interim WBC lightweight champion Isaac “Pitbull” Cruz (28-3-1, 18 KOS) on December 6, 2025, on Amazon Prime PPV at Frost Bank Center in San Antonio, Texas.
Roach’s estimated purse for that fight is $500,000. This is a fight that Roche can lose, which will cause his stock to plummet.
Move the $40 million cause tank
Instead of giving Roche a match, Davis opted for a bigger fight against Jake Paul, which would earn him an estimated purse of $40 million. That’s a lot more money than he would have gotten fighting Roche, who is nowhere near as popular as Jake.
It’s understandable from Gervonta’s perspective why he chose the fight against Paul rather than reconsidering a fight against Roche. Financially, it’s not worth taking a rematch. Doesn’t come to fruition.
