North Korea’s leader threatens to accelerate the expansion of Pyongyang nuclear weapons due to a sign of “hostile intention”.
North Korean leader Kim Jong Un threatened to accelerate the expansion of his country’s nuclear arsenal, which led to the inclusion of the continuous military exercises of the United States and South as a sign of a “hostile intention”, according to government media.
Kim, who made statements during a visit to a marine destroyer, described the training as “a clear expression of his will to stir war,” according to a report published on Tuesday.
He insisted that North Korea should “quickly expand” the nuclear weapons program, noting the inclusion of what he called “nuclear elements” in training.
The annual Ulchi Freedom SELD exercises have started this week, bringing the field exercises widely with responses to what the United States and South Korea claims nuclear capabilities in North Korea.
Exercises will be run for 11 days, with half of the fortieth field training event to September.
Defensive
South Korea officials said that the amendment reflects the invitation of President Lee Jay Meong to decline, although analysts complain that Pyongyang will respond positively.
Seoul and Washington claim that exercises are purely defensive, but Pyongyang condemns them regularly as preparations for invasion and often answered with arms tests.
North Korea is expected to appear in talks between US President Donald Trump and South Korean President Lee in Washington later this month, with efforts to reduce Pyongyang’s nuclear ambitions on the agenda.
“Through this step, North Korea shows its refusal to accept nuclear disarmament and the will to irreversibly nuclear weapons,” said Hong Min, an analyst at the National Unification Institute in Seoul.
Research published by the Union of American Scholars last year estimated that North Korea may have produced enough materials explaining up to 90 nuclear warheads, although the number that was already collected was closer to 50.
Besides her nuclear ambitions, Pyongyang also develops her marine capabilities. North Korean public broadcaster Kcna said that the country aims to complete the building of a 5,000 -tons of Choe Hyon, which is 5,000 tons by October, and tests the flight and air rockets for ships.
