The story of “Yellowstone” is full of arch rivals, ego-fueled power grabs, and a lurking threat of violence simply waiting to explode, but this fantasy drama seems to have ended up seeping into the actual production of the acclaimed Paramount Network series. Just when you thought it couldn’t get any more intense behind the scenes, it reached its peak Star Kevin Costner is parting ways with the show and threatening to take the production to courtThings got worse somehow. It all came to a head during a heated confrontation between Costner and actor Wes Bentley during filming, which has been described as a “turning point” in the ongoing conflict between Costner and creator, writer and director Taylor Sheridan.

In a lengthy profile detailing Costner’s fall from grace across the industry in the past few years, Hollywood Reporter Some sordid details were revealed while filming a particular moment in Yellowstone. According to THR, the script called for a “tense exchange” between Costner family patriarch John Dutton, Kelly Reilly’s Beth Dutton, and Bentley’s Jamie Dutton. But arguments on set over how to play this particular scene quickly turned into an almost physical altercation. Reportedly, Costner (who was also an executive producer on the show) wanted Bentley to deviate from Sheridan’s script. Bentley not only refused, but apparently stated in no uncertain terms that he had joined the production to do the Sheridan series, not the Costner series. What happened next, according to an unnamed source, would leave Riley in tears and briefly shut down production.

According to Shahid:

“Kevin didn’t like that, and he lunged at (Bentley). They didn’t make fists, but they were in each other’s faces, pushing and pushing and getting hotter until they were separated.”

Kevin Costner’s confrontation with Wes Bentley in Yellowstone speaks to a larger problem

All’s well that ends well, it seems. Even after “Yellowstone” bowed out with its fifth and final season in 2024, main protagonist John Dutton completely wrapped up the show and made way for A revolving door of spin-offs and pre-showswe’re still discovering new details about the simmering feud between Kevin Costner and Taylor Sheridan — and how it caught others in the crossfire. Longtime fans know that Costner has a reputation for being “difficult” to work with, having spent decades building his credibility as a movie star and director in his own right. All that success (and a few notable failures) must go to one’s mind, and yet each season spent working on “Yellowstone” brought Costner closer to what a THR article calls “diva-like” behavior.

As another source who was present during the feud between Costner and Wes Bentley explained:

“The Wes incident was the through line. Everything was different after that. Everyone loved Wes, so that really pissed off Taylor. Kevin and Taylor butted heads from there on out. It got very awkward.”

For Costner, things would only go downhill from there. After leaving “Yellowstone,” he turned his energy toward directing his passion project for the big screen, “Horizon: An American Saga.” This didn’t go exactly as planned, Leaving the already over “American Saga – Chapter 2” with an uncertain future There is no guarantee that future sequels will be produced and released as intended. The production has since come under fire for lawsuits alleging non-payment of fees, breach of a co-financing agreement, sexual discrimination, harassment, and retaliation regarding a stunt performer who was forced to film an unscripted rape scene without proper safety guidelines (according to THR). For Costner, often considered a titan of the industry and arguably one of our last true movie (and TV) stars, the fallout from all this turmoil could be a stain on a successful career.
