Jose Mourinho weighs the possibility of Benfica’s responsibility after the dismissal of Bruno Lage, who was sacked after a 3-2 defeat on his 3-2 defeat on the Champions League.

Lage surrendered a dual -goal advantage against the Azerbaijani champion at Estadio Da Luz, which quickly prompted the club’s hierarchy.

Benfica President Roy Costa confirmed that they are aiming to appoint a new head coach by Saturday, but he refused to confirm whether Mourinho was the candidate.

“The Benfica trainer should be the winner,” said Costa. “The coach who represents a club of this size must be the ability to bring this team to the levels we ask and give us the titles we want. There is no benefit from talking about names here. No coach has been appointed, and no coach has been mentioned to represent Benfica in the future.”

Reports indicate that Mourinho is open to return to Portuguese football, more than two decades after he left for the first time to join Chelsea. The 61 -year -old was rejected by Fenerbahce on August 29, shortly after the elimination of Beenfica on the Turkish side in the European Champions League matches.

Mourinho’s contact with Benfica returns to 2000, when he managed to manage the club for only 10 games before resignation amid conflict with the then President Joao Vale E Azevedo.

Later he founded his reputation with Porto, and won six awards-including the Champions League in 2004-before he started a high-level profession across Europe with Chelsea, Inter Milan, Real Madrid, Manchester United, Tottenham, Roma, and another Vinerbassi.

If he would return, Mourinho may face one of his previous clubs almost immediately, as Benfica was playing Chelsea in Stamford Bridge on September 30. Their group stage also includes trips to Newcastle United and a home tie against Real Madrid.

At the local level, Benfica sits sixth in Primeira Liga, five points behind Porto leaders with a game on hand. They finished second last season under Lage, just two points of Sporting.

The decision to divide the roads with Lage comes in a political moment of the club, with the presidential elections determined on October 25.

Joao Noronha Lopes, who is widely considered a favorite, is believed to be interested in presenting Robin Amorim away from Manchester United, after seeing it in the union on Sunday.

However, Costa denied that administrative change is linked to the upcoming elections. He said: “I am not here to save any jobs.”

“I haven’t yet gone to the campaigns, because my goal, as president of Benfica, is to ensure the best future for Benfica, regardless of what is happening in the elections.

“This decision -making process must only and exclusively with the Benfica Sports Season, and avoid exposing the Benfica sports season at risk.
