England and Manchester City defender John Stones admitted he considered retiring last season due to injury.
Stones was limited to just 11 Premier League appearances, with his campaign ended in February due to foot and hamstring problems.
The 31-year-old has made five appearances for City so far this season, but has not played for England – whom he has represented in five major tournaments – since October 2024, before Thomas Tuchel took over as manager.
The former Everton and Barnsley player revealed he thought about packing it all in last term.
“Last season was difficult for me, to the point where I thought about stopping,” Stones told BBC Radio 5 Live.
“I didn’t want to do it. I had enough of being professional and trying to do everything right in my power, and then keep breaking down and not getting answers. It was a very difficult place to be.”
“There comes a point where you don’t know why it happened, and it’s harder when you put in too much effort, or are too professional, to be able to play and be available.
“When the time comes and something happens, it’ll be easier to say ‘Well, I didn’t do
However, Stones went on to say that he doesn’t think he’ll actually hang up his boots, citing an internal “fight” and “winning mentality” as his reason for staying motivated.
“My emotions were running high,” Stones added. “I wasn’t thinking straight. I don’t think deep down I would have done it (retired).
“I said years ago when City wanted me to take on a new challenge, I said ‘I’ll fight’. That’s all I’ve known since I was a kid – why should I stop now?
“Yes, there is that battle within me and that winning mentality that you don’t want to stop.”
Stones is in the Lions’ Three For Whost Friendly squad against Wales at Wembley and a World Cup qualifier against Latvia the following Tuesday, which could see Tuchel’s side in their place in next summer’s finals with a win.
Despite injury problems, the defender insisted his love of playing for his country has never waned.
“My love for England, I think it’s hard to put into words. I love England so much – I love playing for England,” Stones said.
“I’ve had some of the best moments of my career playing for (and in) the England Championships.”
